Hood bracing

Recommended Posts

Mickwhitt

Ok I called it a hood, not a bonnet.

So, mine rattles like a tin outhouse in a thunderstorm.

The top surface flexes and bounces up and down at tick over.

I'd like to brace it to stop the vibration, I have some deadening material that sticks on to the underside but do I need to make some kind of brace to stiffen the panel before I glue this stuff on.

Its a problem as I can't stand my gin glass on the bonnet 🙄

We have a couple Horses with a line of stick on foam tape where the bonnet rides in the bonnet connection point.

Not sure if yer black hood body can do that.

Get a cup holder and some earmuffs!                :ROTF:             Could be the pivot point holes are enlarged, if so drill them out for a brass bushing to tighten it up.

MICK, can relate to the hood buzzing , you have to look at each mounting area , and related twisting / chafing ,  added car door  trim strip on back side of hood to dash area , really firmed things up , also added these " fender washers " to all bolt areas, really enhanced the bolt holding point , also used nylock nuts to hold the setting , obviously lubricate all movement points , pete  ,https://www.google.com/search?q=fender+washers&sxsrf=ALeKk03VMu6sxoVaAcdr-r5HKTAl90l42Q:1615036923132&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=1Oi_pjbUMfdtbM%2Cy7-ItE_hAxsO8M%2C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kTvOU2HD6gGZwq8UqYw12R5Ti3LGQ&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjpnOiw4ZvvAhUOF1kFHa9sCZwQ_h0wAXoECCUQBQ&biw=1024&bih=625#imgrc=1Oi_pjbUMfdtbM

As I read this I'm in the McMaster-Carr book ordering more anti rattle trim for hoods. :)

I have my C-160 hood nice and tight on the latch. Starting to rattle at the pivot I believe. Warm weather project

It is just flexing of the large expanse of flat steel panel.

All pivots have been refused, vinyl door seal on the edge where it sits on the dash tower and strong clamps to hold it shut instead of those rubber stretch catches.

The deadening material is specialist stuff for vehicle converters to deaden panel boom etc.

I'll give it a try and report back.

@Mickwhitt I had this problem as well and have a thread on here somewhere addressing it.  Was told the pivot holes were wallowed out.  I welded them closed and drilled new holes.  Put in new bolts with fiber lock nuts. Rattle has gone away.

Two minute job to cut and stick three sheets of this stuff into the inside of the bonnet.

Its only 2mm thick and is a kind of bitumen adhesive with a foil top layer.

It worked a treat and took out a lot of the panel bounce that was bugging me.

You can see it still allows the steel to flex but it has killed the noise very much and im happy with the results.

Mick, I was going to suggest sound deadening mat, but you beat me to it!  Carry on! :orcs-cheers:

This stuff is pretty good for how thin it is.

Most car bonnets have an X shaped brace welded in there to reduce the flex as well as some form of deadening mat.

This stuff says it will kill panel noise as dead as a do do.

Funny, I didn't see a gin glass in that video. :confusion-shrug:

I bet you could use fleece and fiberglass resin to build an X underneath too :handgestures-thumbupright:
