Charger 12 automatic barely moves

Recommended Posts

Motorhead99999

Hi i am new on this forum I have been lurking for a while but can’t seem to find what I’m looking for. I have had a fascination with wheel horse tractors since I was 5 when my dad brought home my first charger 12 auto. That was 23 years ago and I still mow fence lines with it and the sickle bar.  I also have 2 1054 and another charger 12 besides the one I’m having issues with

When my son turned three I found him one at a auction for 75 dollars with a blade on the front and rear discharge mower. Not knowing much about it I drug it in the garage cleaned the carb put some fresh fuel in it and it ran like a top. Since then iv put loaded atv tires on it and chains because he is now 6 and enjoys pulling small tree tops and logs out behind me while I’m pulling trees with my 1220 ford.

Last week we gotten 6-8 inches of snow and my son asked me if he could plow the driveway and he came in the garage and said his tractor wouldn’t push snow because it had no power. It will move ok with no load but as soon as I put a load against it  it whines and purges a little bit will not move in forward or reverse

so so far I have checked belt and made sure it wasn’t slipping, changed the screw on filter with a Napa 1410 and type f trannny fluid and it  does the same thing.

If if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on what to check next   Thank you in advance.

Mark both hubs and axles.(Magic Marker line across hub ad and axle end.)

Then drive it.  do the marks move out of alignment?? could be sheared axle key

Limited slip differential may allow movement with a sheared key on one side but serious pressure will overcome it.

By axle key are you talking about axle to hub key or a key inside the rear end

Sorry to hear you are having a problem   :sad-darkcloud:   But glad to hear you and your son are hooked on :wh:.

If the axle to hub keys are not the problem you may want to take a look at the input pulley to be sure the key there is doing its job.

Just fixed mine a few days ago.

Each rear hub is keyed to the axle.  If either of those hubs move off of those keys or if the key shears then they free wheel and the tractor sets still.  Or limps along as the key grabs and slips and they tries again.  If either axle extends beyond the end of the hub you have mostly likely found it.  Confirm and we can guide you through.  Lots of help here!  Need that young fellow to have a great experience with his horse!

So I had him sit on it chained to my truck and neither axles are spinning inside the hub. It does a whole lot of whining like a power steering pump out of oil.

The charger 12 I have had since a kid I remember making the plate to bolt the wheel on and welding it to a piece of heavy wall pipe  then turning the pipe down till it was just smaller than the axle by a couple thousands Heated it up red hot and slid it over the cold axle and drilling a 1/4 hole through the pipe and axle and put a bolt through them both.  I just started welding so I’m gonna say I was 7-8 ish. So 20 years or more of child and early teen abuse and have never had a issue with it  I just hope to god I never have to get it off lol.

Why did you do that???

You should download the sunstrand manual from the manual section here.  Has a good diagnostic section.

You can remove the hydro pump and motor with out spliting the tyranny which sounds like something that will not be possible now.  With tow valve open and jacked up when you spin the wheels any weird noises??

I think it was my dads idea and he knew how I was at destroying stuff so he probably figured it wouldn’t have made it much longer anyways. Idk how many miles are on that tractor pulling a one bottom or trees or whatever else I did that shouldn’t have been done.

Ill look for the manual now

I forgot for a moment your comment about the hydro noise.  Sorry.  Can't help much there other than to check the fluid and filter.  If it's the hydro I'm going to bail out but there are plenty of others here to help.

The ones that messing up has original hubs on it so I can split this one.

Jacked up with valve on tow just slight gear to gear noises when spinning the tires. Can also feel it a little in tires when spinning.

Here is a link to the noise I’m hearing. It’s way louder on video but I’m guessing this is the motor I hear

This is pushing hydro lever forward as far as it goes. Never spun the tires. It will do this on a slight incline and eventually start to creep forwards.   It does the same thing in revere. I noticed being in the 60 degree garage for the last couple hours makes it seem not as bad if that helps anyone. If it sits in the cold won’t hardly move at all. The video is after it’s been in the garage
