DennisThornton 4,769 #8 Posted March 5, 2021 One of the reasons I try to keep a couple Wheel Horses in the bone yard! Worth their cost after a few parts. And by golly I learn something everyday. Got to thinking about it and now I understand why. Many ends are cast in solder! “ solderless nipple”

Mickwhitt 4,642 #10 Posted March 5, 2021 Yep definitely a solderless cable nipple. Only need a small lathe really, in fact I could make one of these with a drill press. Mick 4

Mickwhitt 4,642 #12 Posted March 5, 2021 I will make one tomorrow, see how long it takes. Doesn't need the hexagonal section, just a rim to hold it in the throttle arm.

ranger 1,758 #17 Posted March 6, 2021 (edited) In the dim and distant past, I’ve made new nipples for throttle/clutch/brake cables on my old motorcycles by trimming a small amount off the outer cable, splaying the end of the inner cable strands outwards, drilling the size of hole needed for the nipple in a piece of hardwood, cutting a slot in the wood up to the hole, then laying the inner cable in the slot with the “splayed” end in the hole. After melting some solder or lead, pouring it into the hole, you then have a new end to your cable. The splayed strands prevent the nipple pulling off the cable. p.s. Sometimes there’s not enough room in the throttle lever/twist grip to fit a solderless nipple. I seem to remember the heavy duty cables had brass nipples with a small countersink where the cable end was splayed into then soldered Edited March 6, 2021 by ranger

Found at most hardware stores I managed a hardware store and had NO idea what you were referring to, saw the picture and Googled. We called those "Chicago Screws" but they didn't have the nurl. 69 and I think I still learn something here about everyday. "Sex bolts"! I'll be darned!
