mc1960 43 #1 Posted March 3, 2021 The wife was on her 160C it was going good, did not have a load on it, and it just stopped moving. belt and pulleys are moving, going in and out of gear it sounds and feel like, must be something inside the transmission any ideas what it may be and if I could find parts? Thanks
DennisThornton 4,769 #2 Posted March 3, 2021 (edited) Were there some unusual delays that felt like the clutch wasn't engaging? Shift, let the clutch out and then a pause and THEN it moves normal? If so or if not so, I suspect that a wheel hub has slid off it's woodruff key. Not going anywhere when that happens and EVERYTHING you can see looks as it should. Look at both ends of the axles and see if the hub has moved. Mark them if needed and try to move again or have the Mrs. watch it, or you watch it. Lots of help here to get it back again if that is the issue. Best failure you could have! Well, probably the cheapest. Achto 27,605 #3 Posted March 3, 2021 Check the hubs first. If the hubs are good then check the input pulley on the transmission to see if the key has sheered.
953 nut 55,321 #4 Posted March 4, 2021 Be sure the Hi/Lo range selector isn't between gears, could be it was bumped out of position.

Hub was ALL the way back against the trans and would go no further. Key was almost out but I still couldn't remove it. Couldn't see how to align the groove with the key either so couldn't pull the hub off!. Wouldn't go back or forwards! Vise Grip and some persuasion, persistence and a couple minutes later. Sort of rolled out the key with the pliers and hammer. That hub only had one set screw but has two now.

mc1960 43 #10 Posted March 4, 2021 Thanks for the help, I am going to get the hub off and see if it sheared or slipped off, hopefully this weekend, but the shaft was turning just not the wheel.

Both my failures on different machines were do to the hub moving and exposing the key. No key was damaged in either case! Hubs somewhat, but still able to return to duty. As long as you can manage to work that key out you should be ok. You might need to polish the exposed axle shaft with sandpaper to remove the hub. Reposition the key, then the hub even with the axle, back off the locking nut on the set screw and torque to 30 lbs. Snug down the locking nut but don't go overboard. Some suggest that can pull the set screw back some. That nut is just to secure the set screw, not the hub.

When you get the hub off make sure to inspect the keyway in the hub and axle for damage.
