Horse storage (shed / work shop)

Hey everyone, 

Finally getting my new storage shed delivered next week! Pretty excited to move my stuff from the Harbor Freight "Portable garage" which is basically a big tent. It's lasted a few years and is starting to fall apart now. 

 

My plan is to put my 416H/417A and Jd170 w/bagger in it with my tool chest and 60 gallon compressor along with a large sand blast cabinet. Spring needs to come soon!

 

It's about a 10x24 Amish built for a good price, and I have 100amp service from my old shed that I'll have to hook back up to this one.  We are excited to use it this summer.

 

What do others use?

We combine 3 roofed storage areas and a tarp. 

The basement workshop is where we've been doing most of the work on things for about a year now. 

 

We have a 12 x 20 tent garage which is the main Horse stable. Sits right at the level of the driveway so it's easy access for snow removal. 

 

The outdoor workshop is a 16 x 20 shed built on PT stilts. The building itself is showing its age (only 19 years but poorly built) and the "foundation" is certainly no better. 

 

The parts pile sits on a few pallets and is covered by a large tarp. 

 

 

Trina and I have been looking at putting up a garage/apartment building again. 

Still a long way off from finalizing anything. 

Likely will be 3 or 4 bays with a small apartment and separate workout/gathering space above it. 

When we get to that the tent garage would be moved and likely become wood storage. The outdoor workshop... Well it isn't worth putting any money in to so maybe it'll be in an argument with an excavator....

Cee245 I have a combo under a porch and 24x24 custom built garage for storage for storing and working on. But I have 10 x12 shed. So switching it around a bit putting tractor blowers and carts or what ever else I can fit in there to free up space in the garage for other work or enjoyment like playing drums to music. So If I need take it out of the shed bring to the garage. I hope you enjoy your new shed. It is great to have extra room.

I got very lucky. My uncle, who unfortunately passed away about 10 years ago, had a 1600 square-foot garage in the town near where I live. He used it to store and work on car projects.  He had five daughters who didn’t have interest in the garage or the cars. They knew I had my “junk “stored in different places including a rental. They approached me about buying the garage and told me that if I would give each of them $2000 it would be mine. Even my wife knew what kind of deal that was and we jumped on it and haven’t looked back. It has two double car garage doors, a fairly large work area, electric, insulation, and heat. I’ll never be able to thank my cousins enough. I’m very happy with it and they seem happy that I got it.  I really don’t have a picture of the entire place but here are a couple pictures that basically show what the front of the building looks like. I Caulked and painted everything when I got it to seal it up against the elements.

I recently bought a 12' x 16' shed for my back yard. My dad bought me the Kubota that use to belong to my grandfather, and it wouldn't fit in the small 8' x 10' shed i already had.

 

No power (yet) as it is currently just used for storage.

 

Just warning you now, it will fill up way faster than you think.

Rule of thumb I tell people.

Put genuine consideration into what you think you need.

Double that. 

Then, triple that. Usually it'll come out about right.

People think I'm trying to be funny when I say that and I am because that's what I do.... but the "funny thing"  is that formula usually works out fairly well.

I’m lucky enough that a 40x80x16 pole building came with the property and it’s cemented.  I have 120’ or so of pallet racking put up and a big area of it is dedicated to the Horses.  There’s a Hilo in the shop too that makes it helpful to load and unload from the racks!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh so true, After its built that has to be the first and most used complaint. Being in the construction industry Id be a rick man if someone gave me a penny every time that was said, I wished I would have went bigger heheheheh.

Ive been eyeing some shop ideas too, and here is one you might like ebinman, I was thinking 3 shipping containers corner to corner, then building a quansit hut spaning the containers, whats nice also is you not only get 40x40 inside space but you also get 8 x 40 storage on all 3 walls, heheheheh, it sure wouldnt be hard either to make a second floor inside either, just a thought?? I love to weld so anything steel rocks in my books, rodence and insects have a far harder time getting in too. Dang my typing changed fonts again, dang keyboard!

I believe @19richie66 has this in mind, sort of.  Cheap-ish, easy foundation to a rock solid building!

I built my garage in '93.  It is 24 X 26 The concrete guy was a friend of mine. My lot is sloped, and I have a walk out basement from the house. We got to talking about the concrete work and he explained that walls and footings would have to be poured, then filled with sand or gravel, compacted, and the floor poured on top of that. Well that just seemed silly to spend all that money on footings and walls, and then fill it up with sand. The floor of my garage is 8" precast concrete, with 4" floor poured on top of that. I have a basement under my garage with a concrete floor and about 7" high ceiling. Without that basement I couldn't have any of my toys. Yes, it cost a little more, but I got another entire 24 X 26 garage out of the deal. I installed a special 7' wide double door in the basement area,  so I could store my boat, when I had one. It's great. I heat my garage to a comfortable level all year, but that basement makes the floor a bit cold. Wish I had put in floor heat at the time.  Live and learn.

. I have a basement under my garage with a concrete floor and about 7" high ceiling. 

 

Trina and I have talked about doing just that here. We have similar sloped land. 

Our lot is plenty big so setback and size limitations aren't a concern. 

We would like to have a 3 car garage, apartment above, and workshop/workout area below. 

 

Nowadays the codes allow it but the engineering and extra cost behind it could be prohibitive. 

From what I've been reading a house or garage slab foundation uses 8" concrete walls. A garage with a basement uses 12" concrete walls. Then the floor of the garage has to be way overbuilt. 

 

It'll be something we ask about for sure. 

 

Looks like it will substantially less expensive to go bigger/longer with the building than deeper underground.

I hear ya on the HF fake garage only 1 1/2 year old! 

@HandyProfessor got a shed like that and it worked good for him. 

I plan to do something like Hillbilly's. Now thinking something bigger and move my whole shop there if I'm gonna stay here till I die.
