Isnt it though, my brother n I were finishing off an adition to his barn, the amount he spent and what he got in materials made me sick......the size of USA and the size of Canada with all the wood we have there is no excuss what so ever. I did tear down a large barn for the siding some years back, and it is safely stored up in a hay loft. There is some second grade metal that has been sold in the past as 'barn liner'. i think that the paint may be not quite to spec or things like that. It comes in 21 foot lengths. Anyway, if I did tear down the house, i would build a small house somewhat larger maybe 500 square feet over the footprint of a very strong concrete slab. It takes thought and understanding of how to take a wall down without damage, but a good Sawzall and cutting through nails instead of hammering things apart is essential. There is no zoning or building inspection in the unincorporated town that of the building in question., so it is doable. my dad built three apartments with used material - two duplexes and one two level apartment he built them in his 'spare time' ... took around 4 years per building almost all wood was used (including hardwood flooring) - cement block was used - some of the copper pipe was used etc ...
