Trailer Wiring Opinion

Recommended Posts

Zeek

So my neighbor wants me to rewire her horse trailer for a trip out of state. That means from the plug in the front all the way back to the new tail lights. I do not need to wire the brakes, just two tail lights and the two front yellow side markers. Since it's enclosed I can run the wire down along the inside along the roof line as opposed to the underside.

I can get the kit and all I need and I know how to do the actual wiring. My question is fastening (quickly) the wiring from front to rear which is 24'. The roof/sides are attached directly to the crossmembers with literally NO space to slide a ziptie through, nothing to loop around.

I was considering this ziptie with self-tapping screws. Any other ideas from this resourceful bunch?

Both of those should be good clean options...

If you don't trust the sticky in Ed' s idea you could add a zip screw in the center. I have used these in electrical equipment many times, but not sure how they would hold up in a trailer. Bob

I have used the peel and stick tie mounts in electrical cabinets for years  where there is a lot of heat and they lasted forever.

I don't remember the manufacturer and I am sure there are some el-cheapos that don't stick,  but they worked for me.

Thanks, I didn't think of that. I think I saw some on McMaster-Carr, but I'm sure Amazon has them as well.

I've used the Panduit sticky backs, they seemed to work well.  The no names have become unsticky after a couple of years.  I'd put zip screws in every so often, and where the wiring is changing direction, just to be safe.

Ebmaines idea works well too.  Gives the option of adding more wires later easily if necessary.  I can see a request fot lights in the trailer the first time the horses are loaded, or unloaded at night.

I personally use this type of clip, or the plastic “P” clip, ( much cheaper).  I’ve never had much luck with sticky clips unless they are in a clean environment and attached to a nice smooth surface away from any water / dirt/ vibration, not  really possible on the underside of a trailer. Easy to fit too, using a cordless drill / screwdriver, especially when laying on your back, working overhead !!!
