As it happens I got in a k161 today.

Both bearings had the shields and.........the shield faced inside the block.

Now I’ve seen them both ways.

these are going to be replaced.

Any idea on the spec or year Richmond? What kind of shape are the bearings in? 

I got two 161s open now, both off 701s. Will see what they have and report back 

Note the verbage  in the manual Richard.... IF using. I may be thinking too much like Ed's attorney. 

I had always thought  ther was a drain or weep hole on outside of the bearing back to the case to get oil through the bearing or am I wrong?

Good tip Richard.... Harley mains we used liquid refrigerant to ice them.
