oliver2-44 9,696 #4 Posted February 25, 2021 I see a hawk ever now and then, wished there were more. 2 years ago the squirrels got the large majority of pecans from my 2 trees and I declared war. I trapped 43 last year and did not make much of a dent in the neighborhood population. I’m at 6 this year. I’ve currently got a smart one cleaning out my live trap without setting it off. But I’ll get it.
DennisThornton 4,769 #5 Posted February 25, 2021 My Dad has had nut trees for decades and has killed hundreds of squirrels through the years sometime over a hundred a year! They just kept coming!
SPINJIM 1,981 #6 Posted February 25, 2021 (edited) Just now reduced their population on this side of the river with a .22 short. They destroyed a lot of my peaches last year. There were enough peaches available to them on the trees, so I couldn't get them interested in the hav-a-heart trap, so no other option. I have a hawk, but he can't keep up, and seems more interested in small birds. Edited February 25, 2021 by SPINJIM

Gregor 4,846 #8 Posted February 25, 2021 Some day when my wife notices this, I am going to have some 'splainin to do. This is the siding corner of our house. We have a couple of black squirrels that like to raid the bird feeders. They scrape out everything to get to what they want. I declared war. I got out my trusty Co2 powered BB pistol. Alas, I'm no Dan'l Boone ya know. I am going to tell her it was a bird. A cousin to the woodpecker.A Black Throated Plasticpecker!

Try to get something behind to help support your filler. Duct tape on putty knife perhaps.
ebinmaine 67,309 #10 Posted February 25, 2021 We have gray squirrels that sometimes leave the yard assisted by flying metal. Reds are the most destructive here. VERY hard to shoot though.
Stormin 9,981 #11 Posted February 25, 2021 Reds are our native ones. Unfortunately some good few years back, greys got imported. Started in the south and have been working their way up north. They carry a pox that is fatal to the reds. We've seen both round here, but not often.

Some of my neighbors or OK with my pellet gun, some are not! So I just live trap them and tell those neighbors I "relocate" them down the county road (where that big truck takes them once a week). I continually rotate bail, corn, sunflower seeds, pinto bean seeds, peanuts.

Darb1964 1,042 #18 Posted February 25, 2021 They are destructive, the reds are the worst, we lay them low anytime we see them. That's why we stopped feeding the birds. The bears also were getting the feeder all the time, lot less mice in the house also.

The rocket scientists that decided to use a soy based product for wire insulation is the problem. Sure, rodent food under the hood, that's gonna work. I don't know what you're after but around here a bb or a 177 pellet will merely dent a gray squirrel
