K161 Flywheel

WHX??

Should I be concerned about this crack? This tractor will be used just for show cruszing and lite duty tub pulling.  Starter/gen ...no magneto.

That reminds me of the flywheel that was on the K181 in Terrance. Just that the chunk has not fell out yet. :( How's your brazing skills??? Maybe you could bevel those cracks out and braze it?? Maybe?

You also have the K161 that was on that 701. Is that flywheel good?

Yep... I think got another one from the motor from the carcass Dan give me. Have not yet inspected that one yet but was hoping to save that one for marriage. I may want to build that motor.

I was thinking, a dangerous thing in itself,  to just cut the key a bit further back. So no stress on the area.

Yah Terrance came to mind as soon as as I saw it Dan.

Almost bet is came from over torque or worse useing an impact.

Does the crankshaft have a taper where the flywheel mounts?  If so, then overtorquing the flywheel nut could have contributed to those cracks.

@WHX24 - about the only thing you can do is mark the ends of the cracks and check them at a later date to get some idea of their growth rate.  The longer they are, the faster they will grow.  Pick up a dye check kit to get an accurate reading on the crack length.  If you have access to a magnaflux unit, that will tell you the same thing.

Looks to me like the cracks are past the hub and are headed towards the ends of the cast in number.

Once those cracks get to the critical crack length, the flywheel will go BOOM - think Boeing 777 engine.

As near as I can tell they are not the far into the flywheel towards the casting numbers. I had thought about taking  a small punch to it to see where it breaks out.???? Can't make it any worse? Brazing it up would mean some special rods wouldn't it Dan?

flywheel spinning at 3600 rpm, don't think the shroud will hold all of the pieces of shrapnel in. If it were me I'd find another.

Jim l wouldnt use only because

as @Shynon says... shrapnel!!

l hate that word! I would fear of damage being done to a block that you can't replace. Then again it may not even happen! Should we take our chances?

:confusion-confused:

I've got a bit of a reputation for pushing some normal limits and I've fixed a few things that were said unfixable but I'd scrap that flywheel if it depended on my skills.

If there was a way to test it after the "repair" I'd be more likely to try something, maybe drilling, veeing it and brazing, but how does one test it?

Scares me a bit.

Show cruising with a potential grenade?  No doubt in my mind ,junk it.  Think how you will explain your decision in case of an accident. If it will be home bound and you are the only one who could hurt fine. If even that is not in the cards, junk it.

I agree with those who say scrap it. I think that crack is expanding and is currently at the point of the arrows at about 4 o'clock, and also at 2 o'clock.

If I try a bit I can see it go further:

I blasted it and then etching primer and that's when I noticed the crack. I will look at those crack extensions with a magnifying glass just to see what you have pointed out Dennis is true which I think it is.  The primer may have covered them up.

access to a magnaflux unit,

No I don't and even then the cost/time would outweigh the search for a replacement.

I'll be scrapping this one and looking at the other one I have. If I ever rebuild the one from Dan's 701/161 then I'll hunt for one.

Nother thought is the key was rammed in too far plus over torque? ?

If I wanted to crack it that's how I would do it!  Too bad really.

Gregor

I'll never use a rattle gun on a flywheel again.  Learn something new everyday. I was able to get a new flywheel for my K161 from Lincoln.

Hopefully my wife will let me use one of her torque wrenches.
