Weird Starter

Recommended Posts

I was going thru my parts piles and came across this starter. I'm almost positive it came off of a 74 C-160 that was toast. But it's different than any Kohler starter I've normally seen. Mount os on top and it wraps around to the bendix end. It's WH red with like 20 teeth. It still had the positive cable on it that was connected to a solenoid mounted on a flat bracket with the condenser on it as well. Maybe it was just acquired in a pile but anybody recognize this rascal? It says Bosch SMH 12 on it.

That looks like a "high" mount starter.  The lows are on the Kohlers 10, 12, 14, maybe 16.  If you check the Kohler manual you will see the High mount starter there.  :occasion-xmas:

My Kohler manual calls it a "wound field starter" as opposed to the permanent magnet type. doesn't say what it fits. If it is a small block starter  I have no idea how I acquired it. I'm thinkin maybe someone threw it at me at the Big Show when I was walking back and forth.:)

Looks like a K161/ K181 starter to me. Should have 16 teeth.

Yes, the old wound field starter, low mount. They came both like yours, and also with a cast aluminum bracket. Friend has one on a 16hp Speedex, which just so happens to be red. Had a heck of a time finding his when it failed a few years ago. They aren't common.

As for WH uses.. I have no idea, besides maybe a D-160?

Maybe it was the house supplied parking brake at the bus stop...
