Gordyhogg 150 #1 Posted February 23, 2021 (edited) Im either looking to repair this one or hoping maybe one of you guys maybe has a decent one for sale? There was a poor patch of jb weld on it and it started leaking all over my new paint. I was considering buying jb weld fuel tank repair and then sealing the inside with red kote...but if i can just get one cheaper than the repair id rather save myself the work. It also needs a new shutoff valve and the cap leaks when its full. Any help is appreciated thanks! Edited February 23, 2021 by Gordyhogg
Achto 27,609 #2 Posted February 23, 2021 I have repaired them by tapping the metal down around the hole to create a small dent. Then I solder the hole shut and put a smear of JB over it just for extra insurance. Valve is common with 1/8" pipe thread into the tank. As for you cap leak, take the seal out of the cap and see if you can match it up with something from your local hardware store.
DennisThornton 4,769 #3 Posted February 23, 2021 Flame vs no flame. Torch vs electric soldering iron. Don't blow it up! I think it's best to drain of course, then fill with water with the hole at the top. Now you can safely have your way with it, soldering iron or torch. As ACHTO said, dimple the area a little after cleaning it well, solder up and finish. Added trick. You can only see the holes from the outside but if they rusted from the inside there's likely others that just haven't poked through. If you use a torch there's a way to find those too. Grind clean and play the torch over the area looking for changes in the metal's color, tan to maybe blue. Could happen quickly so watch closely. Any thin areas will heat up faster and show themselves in color! Dimple and fill with solder too. You can check all over the bottom where rust was most likely lurking.
Achto 27,609 #4 Posted February 23, 2021 Good point on the electric vs flame. I use electric or a separately heated iron when I can. If I need to flame heat or weld, I use a hose to fill the tank with CO from my truck exhaust. Pushes the O2 out & no boom. I had a tank pop while it was filled with water, must have had an air pocket. Bout pooped 'em! 1

I've fixed full size vehicle gas tanks but I'd never take them for granted! I'd suggest electric soldering iron but the metal has to be clean either way so I can see someone grinding first and then blowing it up before getting a chance to solder it! Might as well fill it and use a torch.

Achto 27,609 #12 Posted February 24, 2021 @Gordyhogg In an attempt to pull this thread back on track. You could give A to Z a call to see if he has any gas tanks. https://a-ztractor.com/

A 50/50 lead / tin will be fine, or a no lead equivalent that is made for steel. You can also up grade to silver solder if you wish. Gordyhogg 150 #19 Posted February 26, 2021 Well heres how it turned out. Im gonna sand it some more but i did the old pressure test and didnt see any moisture around the repair...i think i fixed it! Much better than that giant gob of jb weld that was on there and i know this will last a heck of alot longer now. You guys think i should coat the inside with red kote or por 15? Its not real rusty at all in there i think this hole formed from the outside. Also, is there supposed to be a pad of some sort under it when installed on the tractor?
Gordyhogg 150 #20 Posted February 26, 2021 (edited) Oh and a cap gasket maybe? When it ran before with the tank full it would spew out the breather hole Edited February 26, 2021 by Gordyhogg

Putting a thin peace of rubber under the tank would be beneficial.
WHX?? 48,828 #22 Posted March 12, 2021 Late to the party here but that rubber sheet you got from work @Achto ...I forget what you called it, works excellent for tank underlayment. I also put in under the engine on Cindy's tractor just for the halibut.

Basically it's just a 1/8" rubber sheet material. https://www.grainger.com/search/raw-materials/rubber/rubber-sheets-strips-and-rolls?tv_optin=true&searchQuery=Rubber&ef_id=EAIaIQobChMI2vvD94qr7wIVUb7ACh1ptgybEAAYASAAEgLXPvD_BwE%3AG%3As&s_kwcid=AL!2966!3!355671939818!b!!g!!%2Brubber&gucid=N%3AN%3APS%3APaid%3AGGL%3ACSM-2294%3A2ML6TB%3A20500731&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI2vvD94qr7wIVUb7ACh1ptgybEAAYASAAEgLXPvD_BwE
