Gregor 4,847 #1 Posted February 23, 2021 (edited) I saw this video on upgrading the steering spindle to a 1", 4 bolt wheel. After boring the spindle, it seems to me there isn't much meat left to the spindle. Does this look like a lasting, workable plan to you? Spindle upgrade I think the large diameter left on the new spindle for welding surely strengthens things. Keeping the length of the existing 3/4” spindle inside keeps the integrity of the original. Keep in mind too, that yellow C channel is likely the weak point now.
Gregor 4,847 #3 Posted February 23, 2021 I was thinking about this for my C-141. There would be no C channel involved, but I suppose welding on the existing spindle, and getting it that hot, may weaken it also.

I would make sure the weld is good with no undercut. A much bigger issue is what Kevin says about moving stress some place else. I must ask what is the advantage on a wheel horse? 520 sweep 1" axles swaps are out there for a little more money.

JAinVA 4,629 #6 Posted February 23, 2021 (edited) Wheels are easier to come by and no these were not welded on. I used JB weld and they are holding up well! I drilled these spindles and stopped at the threaded area. Edited February 23, 2021 by JAinVA
JoeM 7,874 #7 Posted February 23, 2021 @JAinVA kind of reminds me of a lse front wheel. Wonder if WH used a go cart hub? looks like 3 lugs and a two piece rim was used on the lse.
JAinVA 4,629 #8 Posted February 23, 2021 (edited) That is what I have seen on the LSE but who knows where WH sourced parts from? I know that some who saw my original thread on the hub conversion questioned my use of JB weld over welding. The published shear strength of JB weld is around 3900# per square inch. I estimated the bond line on the spindle at 8 square inches. There are no issues with undercuts or bad welds and the JB weld provides almost 100% contact support . Something that small .0015 figure all is necessary. JB weld.....like Franks Red Hot! Reminds me of a hydro that I bought with a leaking rear seal. I know why the guy didn't fool with it. The rear hub wallowed the key in axle and he JB her to axle shaft. Came off real tough. All the hub puller wanted plus heat! I would say what you got is good to go especially of you roughed it up a bit! Edited February 24, 2021 by JoeM
