just back in from plowing , ,when I plow or move snow , regularly move it to my advantage to work with the angle of the sun , rather than shade. shifting snow from a known shade side of the driveway , to the sun angle side , for most of the day , melts down and makes it easier to gain on " touch up plowing ". my driveway quickly turned asphalt black , as the sun melted off the thin remaining snow coating . obviously plowing my grass back yard areas , is a matter of getting what ever you can ,as soon as you can , pushing far out , to get ready for more. silicone blade rub down , makes snow move like magic , would like to plow snow all day , pete

I've always tried to catch the sun to help with melting off what snow I leave.  Sun even helps salt do it's job.  And the sun does move through the trees and quickly shades the porch and front of the drive so I have to plan what I do with the sun.

Unfortunately, my steep front driveway is facing due North and sees very little sun being shaded by the house.

On a sunny winter's afternoon I was visiting with a friend's neighbor with a very steep on long blacktop drive and I commented that it must be a nightmare in winter.  He replied, "Nope!".  I looked around and asked why?  He asked me, "Where's the sun?".  Due south!  Lots of snow but none on the driveway!  Now, there's times up here in December and January that the sun is pretty scarce, but it sure helps when it shows up!
