Snow blower chain broke, stopped engine hard

Recommended Posts

Good morning!  last night my snow blower  chain broke and stopped my GT 315-8 engine instantly now the starter won't even engage like one of the safety over rides (seat, reverse, electric clutch, etc ) is blocking it. i tried PTO clutch on and off, gear shift wiggle and looking under the seat for a jam. also tried unplugging the clutch cable.  Any ideas? i had already purchased a new chain and idler sprockets just came in Wed.... Dragged it up the drive way backwards but could not get it in the shed, first winter night out side ever for this tractor...

Welcome to the forum.

Don't know if all the 315-8's are wired the same or not.

First see if you can turn the engine over by hand.  The run a jumper cable from the batt+ to the starter motor.  See if it will spin the engine.  Sudden stops can break things inside or shear the flywheel key...

When you say stopped, do you mean it shut off and wound down, or it slammed to a stop?

The former may be fuel or electric, but the latter is mechanical.

With the belt to the blower slipped off the PTO and the PTO lever engaged, are you able to turn the engine or is it frozen?

Do you get any reaction from turning the key?

Thanks  can't believe i didn't check for engine manual turnover.  was snowing hard and i was focused on getting it out of the way 150 feet down the driveway.  "Slammed to a stop" is exactly how  it happened

:text-welcomeconfetti: No snow blower experience, but you will find lots of friendly knowledgeable help here.  I hope your horse just needs some minor recuperating and is good to go.

When you do get it to turn over. If you have issues getting it to start, check to see that the fly wheel key did not shear.

:text-welcomeconfetti:  hopefully not too much damage was done, that’s a lot of rotating mass coming to a stop!

Welcome to the forum.  Good bunch of people here.  If you'be broken something on a Wheel Horse, somebody on the forum has fixed that same problem and will chime in with guidance.

With your sudden engine stop, I'll vote along with those who have suggested a sheared flywheel key.

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks guys! Update so far. Turns over like normal, spins over with jumper wire to starter.  Falling snow and darkness means wait till morning to figure out which safety is blocking my power. Then we’ll see if that flywheel key survives   Thanks again   Sadly I’ll have to settle for plowing the driveway tomorrow with the Allis Chalmers B 10.

The engine survived. I kind of rest all of the safeties and it turned over and it started right up. I moved it to the shed to warm up that snowblower before starting part 2. Blower chain looks like a crime scene... luckily I received a new one and 2 idler sprockets the day before I wrecked it.  Thanks to everyone for the tips and words  of encouragement.

I hit a steel well casing with a push mower when I was maybe 12, that hard stop bent the crank and sheared the flywheel key my dad said as he fixed it back.
