I've never heard locking pliers aka "Vice Grips" referred to as that!  Had to ask Mrs. Google!  Seems to be the UK term for them.

i was not familiar with mole grips. i was thinking of the animal and was confused because i wouldn't think they'd have a particularly strong grip :D

 

now i see that it was named after the company that made them.

not inside an engine, but I bought a truck one time out in the country and blew a steel brake line leaving the guy’s yard.  I pinched off the line and hit the road!  I never checked for brake pedal, but I had pinched the wrong line and had no stopping power!

The sweepers we built at the time had a maximum top speed of 16 mph, drum brakes on the front wheels only, hydrostatic drive on rear wheels. When you lifted your foot completely/suddenly off the “Go Pedal” the drive wheels would lock, no one ever used the brake pedal. By the time you hit the brake pedal, you had already stopped, so I doubt the driver of this machine ever realised he had no brakes in the couple of weeks he had it!  If I remember correctly, the relief valves in the transmission were set at 350 or 420bar? So when stopped these machines rolled nowhere! The Mole/Vice grips were on the hose because my colleague had removed the front axle for steering joint/bearing repairs. I wonder what he was thinking when he tried to bleed the brakes afterwards? Probably felt the pedal was hard and didn’t bother?

It wasn't me, I swear!  I knew of an incident a long time ago where one person had a vengeance toward another over a stolen stereo system.  I ran with some pretty ugly people back then. 

 

This person put vice grips on the other persons rear brake lines, I suppose in hopes that they would wreck.  Fortunately they did not.  The vice grips were discovered and the brake line repaired.

 

When that didn't work, they put a pound of raw chicken under the seat.  It was Summer time, the smell was horrendous!  Enough to gag a maggot.  As I recall it took weeks and several deep cleanings for the smell to dissipate.

I knew of that practice but never used it because I felt it would injure the brake hose.  A little extra time bleeding was no big deal.  You had to do it anyway!

Plus the benefit of flushing out the old fluid and getting new stuff in there :handgestures-thumbupright:

When we moved from the old place to here, the last thing to haul off was the chicken coop.  I had told my buddy he can have it.  We loaded the entire coop building, fencing and top cage wire into one load in the 8’ bed.  Just before leaving the driveway, I blew a line.  The neighbor lady lent me a pair of vice grips and I pinched the compromised line off and drove it to deliver the coop then home.  About 15 miles altogether.  We drove very slow.  
 

All this brake line talk, I recently discovered “copper nickel” tubing, supposedly just as strong as steel lines but corrosion resistant!
