Too much red 65 #1 Posted February 16, 2021 Haven't used the 854 in a while but decided to put a snow plow on it for the incoming storm they said was coming. Go to plow the driveway and it kept surging and almost dying and would only run with full choke. Figured the carb was gummed up since I haven't run it in so long, even though I ran it out of gas last time. Pulled the carb and found a rock sitting in the intake! I haven't pulled the carb since I've had it so there's no telling how long it's been in there. Why? Who would take a carb off, stick a rock in it, and bolt it back on? I couldn't believe my eyes. Sucked it and any extra crud out with a shopvac. 4

lynnmor 7,315 #3 Posted February 16, 2021 That doesn't look like the rocks we have around here, there must be more to the story. Dig that "rock" out of the shopvac and take some more photos.

953 nut 55,329 #7 Posted February 16, 2021 Mostly just mouse nests in the fan shroud. Hauled home a parts tractor a few years back that had an active nest in it. Took a few days to get rid of all the mice. Lesson learned, now everything gets tarped and fumigated while it is on the trailer before coming into the shop.

Achto 27,622 #11 Posted February 16, 2021 (edited) I had a customer bring in a Harley one spring that would not turn over. After removing the head I discovered that mice had dragged dog food up his exhaust pipe and neatly stored it in one of his cylinders. One more reason why strait pipes can be hard on an engine. squonk 41,164 #16 Posted February 16, 2021 GM used to have a heated grid underneath their Vari-Junk carbs on the straight sixes. Dog food would melt there into one solid mass.
Jeff-C175 7,202 #17 Posted February 16, 2021 9/16" combo wrench in the lifter valley of a 396. I was wondering what happened to that wrench! I had to apologize to my friend for accusing him of running off with it! (I still have one of his wrenches, we were always doing that to each other)
pacer 3,174 #18 Posted February 16, 2021 Had a KT17 that I got cheap because the PO couldnt figure why it wouldnt run, -- he sez, I pulled the plugs and it had no spark and now it wont turn over!" I'm just tired of fooling with it. $100 and I took it home, first thing I did was to get the heads off ---- well, well, no wonder it wouldnt turn over, there was a good sized Dirt Dauber wasp house on top of a piston (he'd left the plugs out) Cleaned the dirt house out and with a new coil, it ran rather nicely. Guess the moral here is dont leave your plugs out......

Herder 2,354 #24 Posted February 16, 2021 I had a screw come out of the butterfly on one of my 953's carb. The top of the engine was full of shrapnel. Never found the screw. But the rock tops my story.
