Do you have the hitch pin out at the rear of the transmission?
I take a thin putty knife or a wood chisel and start at a corner an tap it in  and work my way around to break the gasket loose.

This thread by @stevasaurus should get you started on a successful rebuild. You can find a new gasket and any other parts you'll need at Wheel Horse Parts and More.

If you can tip the tranny so that the right hand side is down, you should not have an issue with the gears falling out.

I always do them right side down.  If you leave right rear tire on, it makes a nice stand.
