1988 520-H Drive Issues

Recommended Posts

520hC-120

Hi all, I have a 520-H that just last week was driving fine and clearing snow with no issues. Now as of today it cannot even back itself into the garage because only one wheel is actually delivering power to the ground. I got it in the garage with some help and jacked it up, and took off the left side wheel which is the side that is not turning. I then spin the right side wheel in the reverse direction and the left side axle and hub turn in the forward direction, as it should. Then I started it, put it in forward and both axles AND the hubs are spinning (not a broken axle key). I can hold the left side hub while the tractor is in forward gear and it will just stop with just my hand holding it. Are there any other keys that could be broken? I ran into a problem about 4 years ago where the tractor magically fixed itself after not being able to move at all, seems as if it's un-fixed itself. Yes the transmission fluid is full and yes the hydraulic lift can still lift the 380LB snowblower with ease at idle. If you need further information to help me, don't hesitate to ask. Thanks.

If the axle keys are OK, you will have to open it up and see what is broken.  Can you move the axle in and out a considerable distance?

The hub is on the axle still so it doesn't allow for much of any play, but with the hub on there is 1/16 to 1/8 inch of play (estimate). The drill has to come out if I want to take that hub off because someone before me broke the bolts off that press and retain the key on the axle.

You may already know this but those are pretty hard, have to use good bits and oil start with an 1/8" May want to use a long tapered punch that is sharpened to bump it and see if it will turn first. Worse come to worse, if it is the one over the key a big puller may drag it off??

From the things you listed it sounds like you broke something in the pinion area.

Good idea actually, I have a harmonic balance puller that shouldn't do any damage. Maybe I'll try that first. Are there good sources for 520-H transmission rebuilds? I can check myself but if you have immediate knowledge that'd be nice. I think that Craig Ardnt did a series on it if I'm not mistaken.

Might be able to replace cheaper than repair if your having some one do a rebuild. Only issue, I believe the HC have a higher ground speed the normal H tractors.

If your only needing the pinion unit and or axle I suppose if you shopped around might come up with one for $100 give or take some. Gaskets are pricey though.

It has been a while since I had one of those apart. After the unit is out and drained I think removing the left hub and brake hub, the case can be split. Of course the right hub needs removed to pull the axle out of the case.

Hydro can be left in place.

If you take it apart and find it is in the axle / pinion unit send me a pm I have some of the parts and they will be reasonable.

I'm wondering if the main gear off the pump unit and or  the differential gear is stripping. Enough contact to turn the axles with no load but not enough to move the tractor.

I had the same problem try to take the panels off on the drive belt side and see if the belt tightener spindle is blown out its bearings. hope that helps
