Flip up snow plow wings

Recommended Posts

JoeM

I was thinking mechanical, when the blade was turned it would work the wings. I did not do the geometry, just a basic rough idea. Might have to have springs and stops on the rods so as when the blade is straight the wings are flat. Figured using plow pivot to as a starting point.

@Tractorhead you want to run with this?

I thought so, especially after adding the electric actuators, put 1 forward 1 back after going first pass vee?

I been thinking on trying a V plow.

Maybe 3 feet each side.

I could run up the middle. Then use the sides to push back rows a bit. Then scoop to it's destination.

Yep, this was where I was headed in my first post. Only with a flip up instead of to the side

"..... But you want it to work without getting out of your seat (or cab).

Shouldn't be that hard to add a linkage that pushes or pulls the "trailing" wing up as you work the lever to position that end of the plow rearward.

pushing snow left? Left wing up, right wing down.

pushing snow right? Left wing down, right wing up.

pushing straight? Both wings down"

Hmmmm Im wondering what the wings are for? Especially if they are straight ahead, I understand the angle ones just like the snow blower too but....the snow blower is shooting the snow so the scoop area doesnt completely fill. Was thinking even with chains and double wings it might fill to the point of loosing traction unless I guess if the blade is on an angle??? Now when a person has 2 WHies one with a blade to start and the other with a blower tossing it over the bank.

I just grabbed the question and give a possibillity to brainstorming of how they can be moved from Seat a little more comfy.

the idea with the straight wings before comes up and was not mine.

I thinkering arround to use 2 sidewings as collector on a Blower instead of a blade. In an 30-40* angle.

I started this thread because my WH is pretty maxed out at 48" for heavy pushing but I like to come back and really scrape and clean but I still can't use the full 48" because even some light snow will slip out the forward side.  When I saw flip up wings and thought I saw a solution.  Many others have jumped in with some great ideas including the wings being straight ahead.  I think even that would work for me with light snow, but not heavy.

I'm curious to know how you define that. Are we talking about grabbing an entire plow width of large or heavy snow?

Also wondering how much weight and chains you have...

I believe that’s considered reverse Ackerman?  Or negative maybe?  I’d prefer to set my zero (straight) at 15 to 20 degrees, then “steer” the wings from 0 to 30-40 degrees, respectively.

Yep, I was thinking about capturing the snow, thought a bit and decided to revise trying to get a full swipe. Might be something I work on later in the year. Might have to model it not sure about the geometry, just thinking a bit.

Thanks for the adjusted drawing @JoeM.  This has promise. Keeps the snow from falling off the leading edge of the plow and adds a bit of width to the trailing edge.

With the right linkage, straight ahead could be both wings forward or both wings out.

Does widen the plow overall so parking/storage might dictate a need to fully retract both wings.

..... Get a larger shed or Barn or garage because you need more room to be able to store more Horses anyway.

I proposed a workshop/shed at a recent household board meeting and the motion failed on a 1 to 1 vote.

Others may have better luck!

It would be nice if a garden tractor could make one pass and at least open up the drive.  Wonder how big a V-plow our GTs could push?

Now thats the Horses ass made red heheheh, thats the best Idea I seen yet as sometimes there just isnt enough snow for a single stage snow blower to toss snow, plus at times in wet snow the single stages are just a waste of time, but this takes the cake for sure, wet snow and melted water can be scouped more easily in a inverted V and light snow or how ever much snow your tractor can push in flat and for quick off to the side runs either in a flat or to the side. Now this is what Id build for sure, in fact I just copied the pics because its going on my WH to do list. Hi 5 to WVHillbilly520H

Oh definately on the snowblower that would be the cats ass too, no switching between plow and blower, another fantastic Idea Hi5

Subjective for sure.

C-85

23-8.50x12 filled with RV fluid

2-link (medium duty) not V-bars

NO additional weights

I hope to catch the snow event with no more than 6" of medium weight snow.  First pass will most likely be fine but it could get tougher before I get it all moved out to the outer edges.  Less inches or lighter fluff then no issues.  6" heavy or just deeper and I start to struggle with the first pass and can't take full additional passes.  Steering becomes an issue pretty much right along with the traction issues.  Little 8 HP seldom complains.

I have weight and I guess I've been waiting for someone to put them on...  I hope I see a very noticeable improvement in traction

Hope to do the roller chains a the same time.

I took all the wings of my single stage blower off to lessen the weight and then added my own helper spring made from garage door spring to make it easier on the lift mechanism, it worked excellent by the way, but I do miss the origional wings for that added width, but Ill be buying a 2 stage soon, either a WH made or Im going to buy a walk behind 2 stage, and adapt it to Big Red, Ill definately look at adding it to the 2 stage, plus there a tad lighter to lift then the WH blowers, well the single stage anyways.

I think it would be a reasonable idea to call the local representative office of the International Weight Installing Fairy Association.

definitely a good idea to get that thing as heavy as possible and also get chains on the front.

I have to share this with you!  I just went to Tractor Supply.  I just got back from Tractor Supply.  I'm just now going back to Tractor Supply WITH my billfold to pay for the other set of #40 and links!

Hopefully next time I'm online...
