roy 13 #1 Posted February 11, 2021 Man, didn't realize there were so many parts under my WH 418-A! Got the deck stripped down, painted with POR-15, 2 coats underneath, one coat on top & hi-build primer & will do a final red, along with all the linkage, all in Regal Red actually, all I could get with all our stores in lockdown. My brand New bearings - I don't want to pound them into place, I;m hoping you guys can suggest a better way to install bearings, I.E- Heat up the housing, with my gas torch, making it easier to slip bearings into place, I've read this is a proven method PS- I did get the Lucas red & tacky grease, oh jeez, I just realized, I guess I won't be packing the housings with grease before I heat em up to install bearings! Any Best way to install bearings- I;m all ears Thanks Roy
Stepney 2,325 #2 Posted February 11, 2021 Aluminum spindles? They aren't a tight fit at all. Grab a block of wood and tap them in nice and gently. If you're really nervous, I guess you could heat them and use a thin seal driver that is the OD of the outer race and go about it that way. I've done literally dozens. Never had one come back.
Ed Kennell 38,028 #3 Posted February 11, 2021 I often use a deep well socket that just fits inside the housing.
roy 13 #4 Posted February 12, 2021 Aluminum yep. I actually tried a test fit last night & your right, with a small amount of effort I can see bearing bedding in without having to heat em up, or run to my buddies to use his press. Thanks fellas! Roy
roy 13 #5 Posted February 14, 2021 Another question for you guys. Now the mower deck is all fixed up, about to install spindles. Let me see if I can explain this quickly - The center post has 2 holes in it, that, when you force grease into the top grease nipple- distributes the grease into the main housing. The hollow center shaft that sits between the bearings, also has 2 holes in it. There is no way all these holes will line up once the upper & lower bearings are in place. Are they supposed to line up, to distribute grease?? Thanks for any info Roy
