K301 Air Filter Assembly

Recommended Posts

cschannuth

I was plowing snow today and my charger 12 started to run a little bit rough. I topped off the fuel tank and took off again and as I was backing up the entire air filter assembly was laying on the ground after I looked up from backing up. The three screws that attach it to the carburetor had come loose inside the housing. I put a little medium duty Loctite on the three screws and reinstalled it and everything looked fine but it appeared that I could see a little bit of light between the filter housing and the face of the carb. Is there supposed to be a gasket between there? Without it it seems like it might be a spot for air to bypass the filter and go directly into the carburetor.11F945FE-F00E-4827-8131-386B22972D81.jpeg.ec10cbf2526651f6a863114ed4b4885b.jpeg

WHX??

Yes there is a gasket there Craig. Bigger question is did the screws get ingested by the engine?

Nope, everything came off in one piece and the screws and the star washers were inside the air filter housing. If there was a gasket there it might have been sucked in because I can’t find it anywhere. But it was running for a good two minutes while I collected everything and got everything back inside to assess the situation.

Thank you so much.  Can I get just that one gasket somewhere?  Is that something my local auto parts store would have?

And I had one were one of the screws was just a little bit longer than the other and If it was put in the wrong place would not seal up the housing.

You could get by with a touch of silicone if you let it cure over night. just another option.

I've  always worried  about those  screws coming loose and getting  sucked into the engine. Maybe  unlikely. But I've  started using 3/4" studs with loctite and nylock nuts.

Yes on some the two side screws are short to clear the choke shaft...

You got blind out house lucky then Craig .... yep one of my fears of them shaking loose. I doubt the gasket got sucked in tho they usually get stuck on the back plate.

Those gaskets might be all over fleabay but I like Joe's idea too.

I wouldnt think the woes of your running rough would be caused by it (gasket) missing?

I ordered a new one for $5 on partstree and made a temporary one out of a piece of cardboard for now. It worked fine. The carb was a litttle loose too. This tractor seems to vibrate lots of bots/screws loose.

Thanks!  I’m still not really sure if it’s a 1277 or an early 68 Charger 12 but I really like it. It’s really fast and fun. I pushed a little snow every day this week at my house and the neighbors across the street. It worked great (until I lost the air filter assembly-haha).  I need to do a bit of adjusting because the motion lever works its way all the way forward if you let go of it.213D034A-194C-4DA7-85DB-25782CC9F92A.jpeg.d74c091504fd67e1ed028751be5c43a6.jpegD680368F-C23A-4B2C-8974-DA991BBB2F8F.jpeg.e06ecef8886f7a451240762495723dbf.jpegC6608626-3FC8-4AB5-A568-4E0F0EACEC5C.jpeg.0866a81823d30250d24515626501791a.jpeg

No matter still a nice lookin rig.

Was just a thread on that motion lever problem. Turned out it was the plastic hydro cam plate broke and the retainers that hold it down.

I’m hoping that I can just snug the handle friction a bit to take care of it.

If it doesn't it might be a good excuse to buy a new carburetor eh!

I wonder if part of the issue might be the cam plate. I would think I should be able to feel some sort of difference between forward neutral and reverse and I don’t. It just works smoothly with the lever all the way forward when I pull it all the way back to reverse.
