HittinSteel 12 #1 Posted February 10, 2021 Hello everyone, I have a hard starting issue and would like to begin with new fuel lines (they are original I believe). The line between the pump and carb is also bad (cracked/dry rotted and probably sucking air). I may replace my fuel pump with a Facet electric pump while I'm at it. What is the best way to drain the tank? Also what size fuel line is used from the tank to the pump and then from the pump to the carb? I have the service manual, but this must be so basic, it is not covered there. Thank you. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
peter lena 8,634 #2 Posted February 10, 2021 STEEL, 1/4" fuel line size , good opportunity to also replace the tank shut off valve , that way in addition to use that as your drainage point , you can totally replace any possible points of issue at the same time . personally like the FUEL RATED clear line , I also enhanced the routing and mounting points for chafe/ binding areas. when you replace the tank valve , use silicone grease on the valve to grommet area for easier installation , that valve is cheap , about $ 6 , on line . also installed a facet style pump on mine , in the front of engine area , no noise , no issues. good idea with any issue you have is to do a complete job , if you don't ,chances are some related spot will also fail . lots of related fittings are rated 1/4" x 5/16" as fuel line can expand . pete 3 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
WHX?? 48,828 #3 Posted February 10, 2021 Hittin Should be a petcock on the tank you can shut off to replace fuel lines. Look into the tank and see if there is any debris in the tank. If there is drain iit in to a suitable container and dispose of any dirty gas properly. Now is a good time to remove it and flush if you need todrain it. Yes do look at the petcock for possible replacement and grommet as well. As Pete mentions all fuel line is 1/4 " ID & use a suitable filter. 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I also installed an in line bubble to prime the fuel line for easier startups... man what a difference! Wheelhorsepartsandmore has the grommet and petcock. Vendor on this site. HittinSteel 12 #12 Posted February 11, 2021 I hit my supplier today for a new fuel shut off and bushing, and some fuel line. When I got home I cut a short piece and replaced the line between the pump and carb. Figured I’d give it a crank and Bam! she fired up right away! So I guess the pump is good.... now do I replace the rest of the fuel line and the shut off or follow the old adage.....if ain’t broke don’t fix it 😂 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
