Looking at the forecast all the way through to next Wednesday...gonna be cold. I know temperatures like this are nothing for you folks up north, but it’s downright cold for here. Not even halfway through the first day and I’m already ready for our 60s to come back

I wouldn’t mind the cold so much, but the ice gets real old real quick. Worked one rollover yesterday morning due to slick roads, and three more accidents already today. People here don’t seem to know how to drive when it gets like this

The thermometer said -3 this morning but it did climb all the way up to 7 this after noon. A lot of double digit negative night temps for the next week or so. Looks like we might see 22 for a high next Wed.

Hopefully no major injuries on your calls. I did my time driving wrecker. The experience taught me the difference between a 2wd vehical and a 4wd vehical. I always needed more cable to get to a 4wd vehical, because they went further into the ditch/field.

In July 2006 I was coming home on the interstate with my new truck. The speed limit on the stretch I was on was 70. Cruise on at 70  Not much traffic and I see a car coming up fast. I look down at the passing car and the driver was reading something on a I pad.

I want to see self driving cars cause most new drivers are to easily distracted.I won''t even have the radio on when I drive. When I drive the only thing I concentrate on is driving. I'm sure i have at least a million accident free miles behind me and I am not a professional trucker. I can only imagine what they encounter.

I'm currently about 2 hours east of KC.  Today, driving home from walking the dog, there was some freezing drizzle showing up on the windshield.  Then the thought hit me - how the heck was freezing drizzle possible at 11degrees?  Seems like the raindrops should have frozen well before they reached my windshield?

Freezing drizzle? We have all kinds of rain and snow in England, we are well known for our interest in the weather. But I've never heard of freezing drizzle, surely that is sleet?

By 11 degrees do you mean Fahrenheit or the proper measure of temperature; Centigrade.

As a police officer in 1988 we dealt with RTAs, road traffic accidents.

It changed in the late 90s when RTCs became the description of choice. Road traffic collisions. 

The thought process being that we should not call them accidents as that encouraged people not to take responsibility for their bad driving.

My old sergeant would never accept any report that said there was no blame to be apportioned; there is a due care in every bump he used to say. 

We had to fill out a statistics form for every injury RTC, choosing between one and three of about 50 "Causation factors" which were listed. From "looked but failed to see" to "driving at excess speed" everything was covered. But there was no causation factor that said it was just an unfortunate accident. 

When you think about it that's right, if you skid on ice your driving did not take the conditions fully into account. If you rear-end someone you were not paying full attention. 

We are bipedal animals capable of running at our fastest at around 27 mph. So our brains are only capable of processing at that speed. Then we sit in a vehicle capable of immense speed with amazing complexity and expect our monkey brain to cope. No wonder we crash a lot.

We have all kinds of interesting weather here in the White Mountains. 

Mt Washington is maybe 30 miles NW of us. 

WELL known for experiencing the most aggressive weather on earth 🌎. 

 

Freezing rain or drizzle occurs when the air is warm above and cold below. 

Water can fall as super cooled droplets that haven't frozen or crystalized yet. 

When it hits something it freezes. 

Very interesting. And very dangerous.

On the plus side we have what the locals call "to cold to snow" Seems the rest of the country gets a good sized storm, when it arrives here the air is so dry that snow evaporates before reaching the ground.!

On the other hand Northern New England and in the Maritime storms come here to die. An Atlantic block can stop a storm overhead for several day's before allowing it to depart.

 

If you want to see how much damage freezing rain & drizzle can cause look up Ice Storm of 1998.

Two storms came back to back and stalled over Quebec & New England. Ice on tree branches 2" in Diameter, utility poles & steel transition towers fell to the ground.

Was working for the power co. at the time. many weeks of 16hr. day's.

Freezing drizzle is when is misting/drizzling rain and it freezes when it hits something, but its still liquid in the air. Sleet, to us Yanks, is frozen pellets.

I know, right!! We drove my grandson home to Lee's Summit yesterday from our home in Harrisonville and it was crappy on the way up, but the drive home was awful! Just is a few minutes time it went from snow covered roads to ice. All from that freezing drizzle!!

Car crashes are like getting pregnant, no accidents, just lack of planning or being careless!!!

 

I worked in the bodyshop/auto glass for over 30 years and I wouldn't have had a job if it weren't for careless actions!
