0.105" dia. string trimmer line

Good idea.  I have plenty of that too!

I also have some plastic coated fishing line that might be suitable.  "SHARK!  SHARK!"

My guess is the temp of the air being pushed into the air cleaner housing isn't being changed much by engine heat in its very short passage through the tins. I suspect that tube's main purpose is to source intake air from a place away from the top of the engine keeping it cooler. Unless you're worried about carb icing (pretty unlikely with the carb sitting next to the exhaust manifolds!), I can't think why you'd need warm air for combustion. Engines run better with cool air intake. Am I missing something?

WHX??

Lowell has those lift flags and the plastic covered cable.

I also have a newer short chute that I am probably going to parts out if you need those wings and turner spool thingy Ed mentioned Jeff... guessing they might fit. Might even have that lift flag.

Not unlikely at all actually.  My 70 Chevelle SS suffered terribly from it.

Past two snows I had to stop plowing twice to use my heat gun on the manifold and carb to prevent the engine from stalling out.  There was about 1/4" of ice on the outside of the intake manifold.  Imagine what was inside!

When there's high humidity as there has been with these wet snows, and the temps are hovering below freezing, icing is a real concern.

Throttle bodies on modern engines have coolant run through them for this reason.  Things get incedibly cold when air is pumped through stuff.  Ever drain water out of an air compressor tank?  Even in the heat of summer my drain valve freezes up! (hmmm, sounds like a personal problem!)

Ok, got it. Icing can occur, though I cannot recall seeing it mentioned on this site or with regard to small engines. Have you had it happen to one?

Now that you bring it up, though, I realized a lot of snowblower engines have a shroud around the carb fed by air heated by the engine fins. Always thought it was to keep snow off but maybe....

I suspect the Chevelle was moving a lot more air through that carb than an 800 cc Onan twin.  :)

if it is a concern, perhaps it'd be easier to get more heat from the "hot" side to combat that. Maybe a flap on one of the the exhaust manifold covers (which direct blower air around the manifolds after it has passed through the engine fins).

Yep, twice in the storm last week and once this recent storm.

It happened enough with the KT engines that either WH or maybe it was Kohler had enough complaints that they saw the need to come up with a solution.

The Chevelle was a problem because I was not running the stock air filter which included a hose down to the shield around the exhaust manifold.  Nearly all carburated cars of the period had that tube to the exhaust manifold.  99% of the time it wasn't needed.  Icing only occurs when conditions are high humidity with low temps.  Generally when it's cold out the air is dry enough that icing doesn't occur.  Here in Joisey by the 'shaw' we get those conditions fairly often.  The Chevelle would ice around the venturis even when temps were in the 40s.  It would start running like crap and a look inside the carb you could see the icicles hanging from the venturis.  I had to run with the stock air filter Spring and Fall.

Looks better than the one I've got!

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk prices and stuff!

I'd probably be interested in nearly every moving part if the bearings and such are in good shape.  Heck, I would buy the whole thing if shipping weren't going to be prohibitive!

Now Jim, I know you didn't put those wings on there backwards.   But we don't want to lead Jeff astray.    :ychain:

I'm not real sure why they are taking intake air from under the tins in the first place

I think I figured it out.  They're using the cooling air fan on the flywheel as a supercharger!  :ychain::hide:

No I did not that pic is from when I picked it up but rest assured I did flip them around!

It's actually in way better shape now I went through it end to end, all stainless hardware, new bearings, sprocket & idlers.

The only problem is the chute base is messed up & probably could be repaired but not by me. I'm tall chute & deuce blower heavy now. Plan was & still is to haul it out to the BS if someone wants it.

Yep it is the KT17.   I use the summer position as this is a mower only.

The air cleaner connects to this hole in the tins for winter use.

Series II I think?  Not sure when they switched from the teardrop to the top hat air filter housing.

I'm lookin' and lookin' at the pic and not sure how they are 'backward'?  Is the 'bent' edge supposed to og on the housing?  I don't see any bolt holes along the other edge... and I blew the pic way up!  But, I'm blind in one eye and can't see outta the other ... so...

Jeff, the bend in the leading edge of wing should be parallel to the side of the blower housing, not sticking as in the pic.

They can be flipped over of switched to opposite sides

WHX??

The front bent edge of the wing is supposed to be parallel with the blower. Acts as a drift cutter that way. Some guys put them on backwards thinkin they would grab more snow.

OK, I see it now.  So they're 'upside down' but not necessarily 'backwards' if you follow my logic.

Yeah, makes no sense to put that extra load on the end of the wing.  Should cut the snow for sure.

On backwards they can actually pull you over into the drifts & banks. Tom @Shynon built some nifty plates that went from the leading edge back to the housing. If he ain't slumped and passed out in his machineing corner maybe a pic Tom?

Finally started on the blower today, making a shopping list of parts I need.

Jim @WHX??do you still have the blower you were thinking of parting out?  or did it go to the BS and get sold?

This one has a few minor (fixable) issues with the sheet metal that a welder, hammer and dolly will fix right up.

There's some cross-pollination between two threads about my snow moving stuff so I'm linking the other one here:

How do I get this collar off?  Nothing to grab onto with my 3 jaw pullers!

image.png.d22bf394d9a987a67dbba08d522634b8.png

Now that I've got it all apart and started on the sheet metal repairs, it's become clear that this thing took a bruisin'.  It appears the whole shell is twisted about 3/4" caddy wompus.

Not sure how (or IF, I might not NEED to...) I can straighten it.  Hopefully even with a little twist it will assemble and run correctly.

But I DO need to get that collar off, that bearing seems to be in bad shape.
