Brilliant wood processor!

Thanks to @KAA 1973’s screw machine link, I found this guy on YouTube that builds some awesome stuff!  I see @AMC RULES has seen him before too...

 

I have a limited firewood supply and have been thinking of ordering a semi load.  I believe the going rate for logs is $1600 / 12 cords’ worth of firewood.

 

A simple processor would be a great addition to the farm!  I’d like to see more of it run by one power source, but the design is great!

Here is my splitter, if you haven’t seen it before.  I’ve got a feeling I could add what it needs to be a self contained unit.

@pullstart from what I have seen I think you have what it takes to make something like what’s in the first video, but we may have to call  or at least make sure Mrs. P is there to make sure your, you know in good hands.

@pullstart kev I’m just surprised with all you have accomplished that you didn’t already come up with the idea! Well I know you have turned over a new leaf. I know your being more careful with the projects.

I like the wood processor in the first video. I've looked at several designs of wood processors and have noticed that they all have one thing in common. The diameter range of the logs that they will process is limited. If you take down a tree that is 24"+ in diameter it would not work in the processor.

 

The splitter in the second video is a beast!! One change that I would make on it is a longer throw on the ram. If you were to get into some cotton wood or white oak, I don't think that it would push the log far enough to get it split.

many of the log suppliers around have a maximum diameter.  My guess is they log off an area and sell the big stuff for veneer and commercial products.  The little stuff is sold for fires.

 

I did end up replacing that short cylinder with the long one and it works quite well!  A year or two ago a wiring gremlin haunted me and I haven’t run it since.  It will need some mega troubleshooting to get it going again, but I can handle it if I put my mind to it.

Around here most of the smaller logs go to the paper mills.

I'm thinking seriously of adding a pair of cross knives to the splitter we have. 

I know it would push fine and would save a couple splits.

I love watching the video's of the processors built on a skid steer and it just picks up the log, takes it over the the split pile then slide, cut, and split! So cool! 

 

Oh, and I thank the good lord above I don't have to cut wood for my heat!!! My hats off to you hardy gents!!

Trina and her mom work hard all year to get and move wood. 

We all really enjoy the whole process.

I cut wood with Dad when I was a kid, but we never depended on it for heat. I am pretty sure my Uncle Brown heated with though and if I remember right, it was at his place. Uncle Brown was my Dad's favorite Uncle and he was always in a good mood. Sure miss those days!! 

 

And to totally steer off topic, I would go with Dad and Uncle Brown to the livestock auction and they would always stop at the little grocery store and get a couple of pepsi's, then pour a little out and refill with bourbon. I would never do that now, but times were a little more laid back then and they always took the back roads. Uncle Brown was one of Grandma Littrell's brothers and they are all gone now. 

 

Seems everyone these days are a grouch about everything!! It torques my wife off I'm always in a good mood!

That is cool! Need to make an easy way to load the logs

Don't you have a big back hoe? Would something like this work for ya? Basically poke at the pile of cut to length logs to split right on the ground or making the larger diameter log lengths to smaller ones to be processed or used to load on a processor or.....

Pretty sure it could go much faster than this guy after some practice and run time.

That's a wicked cool idea

Never seen one attached to the end of an excavator or for that matter any other equipment. I've only ever seen them sitting still.

 

I learned an interesting lesson about these twist type splitters a few months ago. 

I bought a very small one that slides into an impact driver. Got it figuring we could use it in the basement for making kindling. 

The principal of the idea was fantastic but the execution was a complete failure. 

I was very much surprised at the amount of torque it takes to bite into and split something not much bigger than a broomstick.

I do have that old JD1010, still haven’t touched it.  I feel like this is a bit of an upgrade from Red Green’s “wheel rim” attachment design!

Bedliner material, the slipperiest surface on earth!

I got a 12 volt linear actuator I would give him in place of the pneumatic cylinder.

At least get rid of one power source, they're only about $50-100 on Fleabay and they would have a more linear feed than air.

I did like the air cylinder though, it acted as a cushion to not bog down his electric chainsaw.  I think that’s why he kept hitting the feed repeatedly.  A simple foot lever hooked to the chainsaw lever might make controlling the resistance a bit more natural... or a slowed down hydraulic cylinder too.
