Got everything buttoned up this morning. She's running smooth as butter and has zero issues pushing around last night's snow.

@ebinmaine is there an easy way to get the clutch return spring on?

Oh man ...

Honestly.

No.

It's a Royal PITA sometimes.

I use several different tools depending on what's handy.

Big needle nose pliers.

A hook like for dentist work.

An old school drum brake spring installer. (yeah I'm that old).

And.... WEAR GLOVES!!!

 Them'll pinch ya.

Boy is it.

I spent about an hour trying to wrestle it in with a pair of needle nose vice grips.

Hoping I get some renewed strength in the morning 😄

I have an old Craftsman version of this tool.  Use it for a lot of things including hooking up springs...

After getting slippage with the 83" belt and the 82" belt being to small, we're on to belt #3. This time straight to the horse for the source.20210228_082206.jpg.5074de262dcfacb8f24c41286cbe8544.jpg

This is how I turn a 10 minute job into a PITA.

That's what I get for using power tools to be lazy.

Any chance that is a cheap grade 2 bolt?

I've told many people over the years... There's a fine line between laziness and efficiency, and ride that line really close!!

No worries man.

I use power tools most all the time. That bolt could have been half broken. Or rusted. Who knows.

I do often use the tightening trick.

I learned many moons ago from good techs workin here in the rust belt.

You can almost never loosen a bolt, but you can almost always tighten it.

Snug it. Just an 1/8 of a turn. Loosen the same. Repeat. Repeat.

Usually with increasing distances it'll work its way out.

It's possible. Most of the other bolts have grade markings on the back. The one that broke didn't.

Got her squared away. Enough stub was sticking out it wasn't much of a problem. Swapped out two new bolts for the ones marked (the circled one was missing anyway). The new ones I had were longer and I swapped them to an area I knew the extra length wouldn't be an issue.

I can't tell you how many times the cheap spare parts packs from HF have saved me. They aren't super high quality stuff but are great for not critical things. Every time I go into the store I try and pick up a different one. Can't beat them for $5

I still am having problems with the clutch. I can't get it to disengage. I thought it'd get better with use, but it just isn't.

You guys have any ideas?

Couple things to check real quick.

With the belt guard ON check the tabs at the engine end and make sure that they are pushing on the belt when it is disengaged but not touching the belt when it is engaged. Those are effectively your brakes for the belt.

Also check to make sure that it is aligned correctly inside the guard.

With the belt guard off and the belt off check for excessive wear in the pivot points.

That's the natural state. Should there be a difference when the clutch it pushed?

Wondering if the lower belt guard tab is too far from the pulley.

Can you get a pic of this from further away and also maybe a side angle?

I think that tab doo-hingus on the idler is supposed to be towards the rear to help slacken the belt of the trans pulley. If that doesn't help, try driving around in 3rd gear and keep slipping the clutch to wear in the belt.

Will do when I can.

The last two days have been crazy at work.
