Other hobbies and interests

Besides around and wrenching, do you have any other hobbies? I used to do a fair amount of fishing, but putting an 18' bass boat in and out of the water by myself, got to be too much of a struggle, so I sold the boat. Walking to the good spots was even more of a struggle. With older farmers retiring, young ones coming up, they don't seem to want you on their property so much anymore, to get to ponds. Corporate farms REALLY don't want you on their property, and there are very few lakes in my part of the world.

Now my fishing poles just hang around, and collect dust mostly.

I used to have 30 or 40 more. My brother just bought a cabin on the river, so I gave a lot of poles to him.

My problem is too many hobbies and interests, my undiagnosed add i guess.  I can't sit still. 

I used to fish a lot.  Getting back into it again with the kids, my youngest wants to be a farmer, so we have transforming the property into a small farm, chickens, Xmas trees, berry, fruit trees, vegetables etc...

On hobby that I stuck with is scale model airplane building, been building 1/48 scale plastic for 30 years and amassed a big collection which ties into reading and researching old airplane stuff.

Greg you wanna go fishin move to Maine.  All KINDS of great places. Access is excellent too because here we have statewide "permissive trespass". 

You can go wherever you want unless it's posted otherwise. Literally.  

 

I enjoy hiking and camping. Love the woods. 

Fishing is great but lower priority compared to tractors and hiking which pretty much takes all my time. 

Tractors to Trina and I are not a hobby. They are Equipment that we use as part of our lives. A necessity? Well we could do without them but they make our living soooo much easier and faster they do border on a need. 

 

 

 

In the past I've built a few scale truck and car models. Still have a bunch for "someday". 

 

Learning new things. 

 

Lately I've been training in martial arts with Trina and her own Sensei. Pretty interesting in a bunch of different ways. 

 

Old stuff in general. Mostly trucks and tractors. Also cars and all other stuff though. 

 

Each year we grow a little more self sufficient. That's VERY much an interest to both of us. Also viewed as a necessity. We don't want to work outside the house just to live. 

We want to make "being alive"  our lives as much as possible.

My son was very much into planes when he was younger. (much younger) He built a lot of models also. Still has a few I think. He wanted to get into aeronautics after high school. Sent him to Daytona Beach for a year at Embry Riddle University. I wouldn't let him take his car, I didn't want him too mobile. Did you know they have public transportation in Daytona Beach? That was a rather expensive year, with a not so good ending. But I'm glad he had the experience anyway. He came home and worked for an aeronautics firm for a while, as a computer programmer. Then life happened, and the plane thing is long gone.

P.S. One of the things I ALWAYS wanted to do was get a pilots license, but it was too expensive back then. Now I can afford it, and I am too old. Youth is wasted on the young.

I snowboard, the girls ski.  I homeschool them and used to be a snowboard instructor, but couldn’t teach ‘em that!

 

I tinker too.  That sounds much more interesting than being a cobbler.  The tinkered thing might be the dune buggy, a truck, race car, or house.  We snowmobile, sometimes ride on a truck hood behind whatever is running, and many other things that most folks would say is just plain crazy.  Rope swings, waterfalls, big jumps, enjoying a good rush...  We also very much enjoy traveling and camping.

We did that as kids behind a '50 Ford Business Coupe. Pulled the rear end out from under it.

 

Pretty much anything involving the outside in winter now, is off my list. Raynouds  I have it  73 in my garage

 

May be back to Maine this summer, depending on travel restrictions. Last time we were in Bar Harbor, and the hotel we were staying at had a lobster bake. All 4 of us got lobster. My daughter (probably 8 - 10 at the time) said "Daddy I don't like this" I don't care if you like it or not, at $27, you are going to eat it! I think she got a cheeseburger.

All those poles reminded me when I was a kid. We picked strawberries and when we got paid my friend would buy a new fishing pole. He did that every week so he ended up with about 20 poles with the ones he already had. Then his father would take us fishing and he insisted on taking every pole!   

 

You need to hook up with the Dino in Elgin and go Salmon fishing on Lake Michigan

I have been fishing on Lake Michigan. Also "COMBAT" on rivers in Alaska. Believe me. They call it "COMBAT" fishing for a reason!
