Sketchup never seemed to flow for me, i use Autodesk 123design, and when it comes to point clouds and meshes im hoping Meshmixer will suit me

I've seen what Sketchup can do and I've tried it but I never got very good with it.  Figured I wasn't up to the learning curve...  But it certainly looks impressive!

Like I said it just didn't flow for me, seemed counter intuitive to my way of thinking The autodesk 123Design is free, pretty powerful, and can be used offline. Its what I've done all the models I've shown here with.

Didn't flow for me either but I figured it was me.  Didn't know 123Design was free.  I just found a download for it.  I see it's been discontinued though.

Have you tried others?  Blender?  eMachineShop?  ???

Ive done a few things with Blender, I havent used emachine shop, done some tinkering with tinkercad, sketchup, etc. I cant see springing for full fusion360 and I hate that everything is cloud based now, so I stick with the ol 123design.Not as fully featured as the expenisive for pay programs, but pretty nice for free.

I'd just like to 3D model some ideas from time to time but I can't take hours and hours to learn how.  That's why I thought Sketchup would be ideal but it's not...  Seemed real easy in the beginning and it was for real simple things but then it lost me...

I learned when i draw a 3 D construction i must sometimes change my thinkering a little.

that depends if you want add things or subtract things.

To fully understand a 3D Program with all it‘s features, you must be stay at this program further

and learn how it works. Another program other doings, different workflow, to get the nearly same results.

I use a very early version of Rhino on a PC completely without Internet Connection

and i didn‘t do an update or an upgrade, because it works for me and i learned - never touch a running System - the hard Way.

When i do a sketch on Rhino and sent it after that as an .STL to Repetier host i need an upscale of 0.89 to fit on my Printer

even it is calibrated, I believe that will be a difference between interpreting the .STL format on import filter maybe.

When i print A sketch from a friend made with sketchup i need a upscaling of 0.76 to fit

on my CNC Mill i must downscale to -0.88 to fit

whatever that reason was, i learned to work with my Programs for my needs, but this learning curve takes it‘s time.

Just my 2 cent

Once you find a program you like be sure to keep a clean copy of installation file just in case! Ya never know when they'll completely remove it from online, or if you suffer a computer crash, you can always rebuild.

I had no idea they had come down so much but I also have no idea how much they will do.  BUT!  If one could scan something as big as one could print!  Oh my!  Piece the broken one back, find a good one, build a prototype and then print all you needed!  Wow!  Make most anything plastic.

Also, sometimes if you have all the pieces, its pretty easy to model something up for a replacement and even strengthen an area that was weak before!

Basically my modeling starts from a flat sketch, I then extrude the flat up into a solid. I do this for each layer that will easily sketch, then I look at the model and start adding or subtracting basic geometric shapes tweaking dimentions etc. One of the most useful tools I have is a press/pull function that allows me to grab any of the surfaces and fine tune it.

For instance last night I modeled a 2.5 inch steering wheel insert. I started with the 2.5 inch circle pulled it up 2mm. Then drew another two circles for the white ring, pulled that up 1.5. Then a center circle, up 1.5, Then positioned my logo model over that circle, and extruded the Horse head, wheel, and lugs Downward 1.5 to remove that material. So now I have a model of a 2.5 inch insert that is 3.5mm thick, and the head wheel and lugs are all recessed 1.5mm. Now a flat white stamp over the whole thing and ill end up with a white ring, white circle, white rim and the head, wheel, and lugs will remain black.

I haven't had any of these scaling issues. What I model in 123d seems to come out pretty durn close on either printer. I do have to adjust the horizontal expansion a little in the Cura slicing program, but then again I'm not dealing with very tight tolerances.

I had them do the painting because I'm just too shaky to be able to do it myself and have it look decent. Great job Thanks so much :text-bravo:

Awesome! Im glad your pleased! It was a bit of a chore but the results are well worth it! On that extra head, if ya spend a little time with a dremel on the center tab it will slide into that base!

Currently have the black filament loaded on the main machine, while im still tweaking the settings for clear on the secondary. Im sure these lenses wont be clear but will they be translucent enough to be practical?

Im also gonna try a couple different internal patterns to see what refracts and channels the light best.

If I spend a few bucks, I'll get another base. :ychain: :banana-dreads:

Slightly larger horse to maintain detail, but not a bad likeness!

Could you just make the frame and glue clear plexiglass on the back...

I could, and that would be easy , but i was hoping to be able to customize the lenses, add a more opaque portion that created a shadow of the logo or "wheel" and "horse".

I guess i could etch the back of the plexi, or a frosted spray and a stencil.

Since a couple Horse connoissers such as yourselves are ok with it, ill go ahead and modify the frame accordingly, Mrs is currently out and about near our closest hardware store, so shell see what she can find thats suitable material.
