Quantity over quality.

I think Wheel Horse whiskey is the preferred drink, while some of us are willing to settle for a lesser aged drink.

I'm pretty pleased how this turned out. If you compare it to the straight off the printer version a few posts back you'll see the difference.

Here's what we learned about priming and smoothing out ABS prints.

1.   150 grit quick overall to clean off the burs etc from printing and knock down the tops of the steps, lines etc.

2.   300 grit to begin the real work getting all that stuff relatively smooth,

3.   Clean with alcohol then Do a first layer of spray filler primer(Thick enough to  count but not so thick as to puddle or drip, takes a bit of practice to get just the right amount)

4.   let dry , be sure to give it enough time to dry thoroughly,  sand with the 300 again, knock down the highs, easy on the corners, be sure to keep your details clean at each step(mouth, mane details, etc.) and allow the imperfections to fill.

5.   Clean again (Sometimes a small brush will help remove any sanding dust from the nooks and crannies) and spray your second layer

6.  Repeat step 4 with 500 grit , switch to the 300 for any stubborn spots and go back over it with the 500 after. sand just down till you just sand off the highs and leave primer in the lows

7. clean again and spray your last layer

8. Repeat step 4 with the 500 again, this time wet sand pay attention to your details and get it just as smooth as possible. At this point, even if you can see a little bit of line, or step as long as you've sanded the high and filler is in the low you're likely VERY smooth.

9 Clean again with alcohol and double check everything. You can always do another primer coat

I tested down to 1500 grit, but that was just too smooth lol. I would worry about the paint sticking well. 500 seems to be a good balance, very smooth but still rough enough for the paint to grab.

While these steps seem time consuming, it really isn't that bad. For more rapid polishing, since for me I'll likely be doing this repeatedly, I may try some buffer wheels in the grits mentioned.

I would really like y'alls input on pricing, descriptions etc. Thank you all for your input and encouragement thus far!

I would think a lot of the pricing would have to come from you for the most part.  Time, materials, and some profit for what's involved in doing this is a good starting point. That would give an idea of what a selling price could be.  Now as far as the buying aspect, that would depend on what someone is willing to spend for such an adornment. I'd have no idea of it takes you to get it to this stage

Good thing is the printer does most of the work.

The design phase i consider a wash, i learn more every time i do it and i rather enjoy it.

Finishing is where my time comes in.

At the prices I have posted, im definately not making much, but it pays for the materials and then some and once i do a few or even do batches, ill get more efficient and can pocket a little more for my effort. Basically im aiming to just grow my supplies and equipment , if I come across a real money maker..great!, but if not, thats ok too, as long as Im having fun and folks are benefitting too.

Could those lines be sanded and polished out?

I did one of these where i sanded only, no filler primer and it did just fine. The filler saves you about half the elbow grease, but as these are printed solid with no hollows and with thick walls it worked just fine just sanding down.

An interesting Still fact and the reason the top half of my reflux column is packed with copper. Cereal grains and the yeast that make the alcohol contain sulfur an unwanted ingredient that throws off the taste and gives ya those awe full smelling beer farts.

Sulfur binds with the copper during the distillation process, gives the finished spirits a smooth taste with out any bad smells.

Foods rich in sulfur

If your farts have a rotten egg smell, then it is probably because you are eating too many sulfur-rich foods. Eating such foods leads an increase in foul-smelling hydrogen sulfide emissions.  Vegetables like Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and garlic are sulfur-rich. Other foods include beer, wine, eggs, meat, and fish.

It's good that the material is plenty thick but I'd want the filler primer anyway just to keep each piece as strong as possible.

Glad to see these are working out for you.

Another suggested "future project".

The ORIGINAL 3D Mack bulldog hood ornament from the 1930s.

Fair amount larger than a Wheelhorse emblem for sure. They are popular though.

Not sure on volume.... I am sure it would be a seller.

If the price was OK I'd buy at least one.

If you changed from an ABS to an acrylic filament the completed parts could be flame polished. They use hydrogen gas for flame polishing but it'd be my guess that clean burning Butane would work just as well.

Well community I placed my order for one of these hood ornaments to replace the wooden one I have.

Seems to me to be a fine product at a very reasonable price. Hurry now they're going fast. :laughing-rolling:

Pictures to come once I have it in hand.

Primer is more for the paint. The print is well laid layers 250 degrees C and they bond very well, then in addition I do an acetone coat that smoothes and merges the shell even further.

If I dont get on that bulldog soon..remind me! Lol

Silver Bull Dog, truck made from alternative engine, transmission and possibly differentials.

That is "mostly" true.... From 1967-1990 and again from 2007 up.

Here's a text from a Mack site.

Starting in 1966/1967, the original “gold” ornaments signified that a vehicle featured the Mack Maxidyne engine and Maxitorque transmission. All other Mack trucks used the chrome plated ornaments. Starting with the introduction of the CL Model in 1990, CH and CL vehicles with the high-level interior trim package utilized the gold ornaments.

Starting in 2007, the gold ornament indicated that a vehicle had an all-Mack powertrain, i.e., Mack engine, Mack transmission, and Mack axles. This is its current usage.

Something to work on! That'll take some sculpting rather than conventional cad.

Anyone ever find a good software that bridges the gap between sculpting and cad modeling?

Either, I don't care for the 'flat' ones in the previous photos.  I like the detailed head better.
