8ntruck 7,022 #26 Posted February 1, 2021 @Mickwhitt - When a Brazilian firm bought the company I was working for, the mix of cultures getting to know each other was interesting. The strength of the office coffee was one point of discussion. My Brazilian boss had a theory about the weakmess (his term) of North American coffee. He thought that it dated back to colonial times when the rebelous Yanks dumped the tea into Boston harbor. Then they realized that they needed caffeine. Looking around, they found this thing called coffee. Only thing was, nobody knew how to brew it, so they guessed and brewed it so it looked kind of like tea. 1

I've also seen theories that point towards the Great depression, maybe even earlier. As the American pioneers were moving from east to west many supplies were in great shortage. In the earlier days coffee was very much one of those. When the Great depression hit there was tremendous amounts of nothing. Got no money. Want coffee. You'll use the same grounds two or more times. We are only 1 to 4 generations removed from those that experienced those terrible times. I can certainly see the logic in your boss's theory and how preferences could get passed down from one generation to the next.

He would fit right in on this forum. We were having fun with him. His English was good enough that he was starting to use local slang and idioms. Being a native of Michigan, I was teaching him northern slang and accent, and another guy in the office was a Texan, who was teaching him how to speak Texan. In return, I was working on some Portuguese with his help.
tom2p 2,394 #29 Posted February 2, 2021 I typically drink one cup of coffee in the morning prefer coffee hot - black - and with sugar (approx 1-2 teaspoons) most times brew with a small farberware pot (electric percolator) most times I go with a 'gourmet' coffee - and like to rotate during the week ; some of my favorite coffees: Northern Italian Scandinavian morning blend Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Jamaican High Mountain Kenya AA Sumatra Mandheling Papua Peaberry Guatemalan Antiqua also like to grab a cup of coffee at Sheetz convenience stores - ground and brewed with their Franke coffee machines ... coffee brewed with 'froth' - almost resembles a cup of hot chocolate just after it is brewed

Pullstart 62,922 #32 Posted February 2, 2021 I don’t remember the last time I had a cup of coffee. Normally it’s at least two! I will drink it black (preferred), warm but not boiling hot, or with some flavor and heavy whipping cream, or foo foo when she buys it for me. Pretty much I drink coffee no matter how it’s served to me. I used to be hooked on energy drinks, had severe migraines without it, etc. yep, addicted. I knew it wasn’t great for me and a blood pressure check confirmed it once! I then decided to start drinking coffee whether I liked it or not. My first day, a cup half full of creamer and sugar, then topped off with coffee. Within a week I weaned myself to just black and have been there ever since. I have always loved the smell, but it took 25 years or so to enjoy the taste!
rmaynard 15,519 #33 Posted February 2, 2021 I drink medium/dark roasted Folgers most of the time with a touch of half & half. Never any sweetener. If I wanted sweet, I'd drink hot cocoa. Just the smell of flavored creamers makes me gag.

Tuneup 1,433 #37 Posted February 3, 2021 Remember the percolators? Mom had one on for special occasions - neighborhood parties and holidays. There is just something about the smoothness of that coffee. Still a little bitter. I'll have to find one on fleabay. Proctor Silex in disgusting 70s orange or green... Oh, to our English friends and their tea addiciton - I brew Canadian tea in a pot until black. The inside of the pot is well stained which is all the better. If I feel a cold coming on, I'll gulp 4 or 5 cups of the stuff. Cold goes away. Since discovering this, I've had one cold and it lasted 3 days. Been years. Wife's family is Nova Scotian so I learned of the benefits of strong old tea from there...

PeacemakerJack 10,738 #39 Posted February 3, 2021 Great stuff guys...as I’ve stated elsewhere on the forum before, I couldn’t stand coffee as a kid, teen, and even the first decade of my adult life. I tried ever possible combination but just couldn’t get past the “coffee” taste. Then about a decade ago, after framing houses through many a Wisconsin winter, I decided to try it again to “warm the innards”. It took time but I developed a taste for it. Today I drink mine black. A cup in the morning over devotions, and then a 16 oz tumbler that I sip on throughout the day. Usually the first cup is hot and the rest goes from hot to cold😂. In the summer, I load the tumbler with ice before dumping in “the Joe”. I found this mug at dad’s about seven years ago and it, well, it has my name on it😎😁😉 the handle broke off a couple of years ago but at least it was a clean break and I was able to glue it back together. As far as the coffee itself, we drink a wide variety, some flavored and some not. My aunt gave us her old coffee grinder last year and I really like the taste (body) of the coffee from fresh ground beans... time to grab another sip and get back to work🙌🏻 2

Tuneup 1,433 #41 Posted February 4, 2021 OK, fished back deep in the upper cabinet and found an old stainless percolator. Must have been the in laws'. Ours had a brew setting. Opened the strainer and was treated to a 40 year old brick of used grounds. Did you know that they're like a gray scrubbing pad? It may be the only 40 year old brick of grounds in the world and it's all mine! This thing will have to be sanitized. The old 70s gem must have washed out to sea with his house in the big one of '04 in Vero.
Darb1964 1,044 #42 Posted February 4, 2021 I do love perked coffee, but my wife brought a K-cup brewer quite a few years ago and it works good. Strong, cream and sugar, I have a sweet tooth. Two twelve ounce cups before noon, I'm good.
