Belt question - 5/8 belt on muledrive

Recommended Posts

Skipper

A 520 runs an A belt on the mule drive for the 60" deck. That's a 1/2" x 103. But if you want to run a B belt 5/8 that is, then how long should it be. I had it written down, but lost it. It's longer, but don't remember precisely. Hoping someone knows :-)

Thanks good folks!

I have no clue if this works in real life, but I did some math, according to the difference in height of the belts.

I came up with 103.5889, or maybe 104”.

Why would you even run a "B" belt or an "A" for that matter. A and B belts are not designed to run on their backsides. You need a 4L or 5L

I looked up the difference in pulley diameters between 1/2" and 5/8" according to it 5/8" belts run 4 tens larger on all diameter pulleys. With  1 half of 3 pulleys that would be 6 tens plus if any difference on the back side of the forth pulley.

So a 104 should work, but found they don't always do.

:confusion-confused:            OK Kevin, which one of your daughters did the math for you.  :confusion-questionmarks:    Know it couldn't have been you.   :ychain:

Thanks. That was also what I had guestimated. I will order a 104" and let you know how it turns out.

Where do you find info on that? I cant seem to find anything on it.?

I can however find a lot of places, that say it is a recommended upgrade to use A or B belts over 4L and 5L, as the A and B belts are much stronger build.

I have run many A and B belts for a long time, and have never had any issues. So just curious where the info comes from, that's all :-)

I think it's in my Gates belt book I'll see what I can do on that. I used to sell of belts

I put a horizontal shaft snow blower on a vertical shaft engine 210-H Put a single twist in the belt with a spring tensioner. I put a B belt on it. Lasted about 10 minutes.  I put a 5L green Kevlar Gates belt on it. lasted 3 years.

Doing some reading. A & B are stronger and deliver more power. 4L 5L are more flexible to go around smaller pullies and backsides. Also A & B belts come with this warning in the book where 4L and 5L do not.

The ability to go around tighter bends seem logical, as the L4 and L 5 belts are not quite at high in the cross section as the A and B counterparts. Good info. But it also seems fair to say that if the pulleys aint small, it is perfectly OK to run A and B belts. No?

Whatever you figure out, I wonder why auto correct is so funny.

I like the first version better,                :ychain:             considering what you were responding to.

You can run what you want. but A & B belts are stiffer and don't tolerate the twisting and bending well. you could try an "AX or BX series belt if you can find one in the length you need.  A BX100 is 103" and it's notched so it will bend easier.
