Maxwell-8 4,277 #1 Posted January 28, 2021 I have to become like @stevasaurus I have 3 trannys the two from bizon, One i know, had a loose axle, hub is thight on her, he couldn't get it off, an i stripped a bolt, bent my puller with it only a hammer could get her loose in the vise. But the other 2 after replacing the axle seal, somehow the bearing just disapeard. You wouldn't know it because the axle is sits in pretty strait. ebinmaine 67,619 #2 Posted January 28, 2021 Get yourself a good work surface that will hold the transmission. I put a hole in my workbench to do so. Get a very sharp wood chisel about three quarters or one inch wide. Use that to tap into the case gasket all the way around and after two or three revolutions it will come apart nice and easy. These transmissions are really no problem at all to work on if you're prepared for it. I've had at least a half a dozen apart. Maybe more. 2 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
71_Bronco 1,072 #3 Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) I've only taken apart 1 so far, but have another under my bench that I need to open at some point. Axles have messed up key-ways on them. I watched lots of videos (most from Stevasaurus) and I was able to do it just fine. I got some replacement parts from Lowel at Wheel Horse Parts & More, and Lincoln at A-Z Tractors. Pullstart 62,912 #4 Posted January 28, 2021 Hey Max! You can do it! One thing I learned, is install the seals after you assemble the transmission. Put some electric tape over the key way slot to prevent tearing the seal. Slide it onto the axle with some grease to help it along, then tap it into the case. A length of PVC pipe appropriately sized slid over the axle will help with the seal installation too. 2 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Maybe when someone replaced the seals? @pullstart, i do like to install the seals when everything is nicely together. Find myself a nice pipe with inner diametre of a hair over 1", makes installing those bearings evenly a breeze. WHX?? 48,828 #6 Posted January 28, 2021 (edited) Hey Max, the bearings perhaps slid inwards towards the 1533 bearings & only way to know is split the cases. When installing any of the caged needle bearings they should always be pressed in. Hammering them in can distort the cages leading to premature failure. DO i really have to buy a new one then? cause it is quite hard to find here in Europe, Got to order them at Skipper I stripped one of the bolts on my hub puller (hub is fine), took me half the day to find 3 new, longer bolts. Maxwell-8 4,277 #11 Posted January 28, 2021 So i started on all the tranny work at about 8pm, local time here. I started with the 314-8,1985, pre toro so 1, 1/8inch axles and 8 pinion diff Opening went pretty smooth, I used some wood like @ebinmaine mentioned and I used some plastic prybars, (lent from my dad for removing car trim, ssttt don't tell him ) The inside looks pretty good for a pulley swapped one. Typical light damage at the end of the different gears, from shifting while moving. Could you guys, take a look, say how it looks, need some expert judges. All bearings are nice too, it also seems that the sifter selector has been welded at it's weak point. but were do i have to look for as well? I drained the tranny oil, looked pretty good, dark but clean. But what I found in the bottom, big sludge, i guess taking a part a WH trans, even if nothing is wrong is a good thing, just for a cleaning up after 36 years. Ps: eb, if i drilled a hole in dad's Iron workbench, i think the garage is suddenly to small form my horses and me. ebinmaine 67,619 #13 Posted January 29, 2021 Every bearing and every bearing contact surface for sure. Where you have a worn gear double check to make sure there aren't any burrs. stevasaurus 22,764 #16 Posted January 29, 2021 File any burrs, either with a good file or a 4" grinder. Touch up with emery cloth if needed. Check fit of hubs, input pulley and brake drum while apart. Just easier to fix. Your gears look great, if the bearings are good, just clean out the sludge. But the next problem is on the 312, no bearings, pics tomorrow, but my questions is: how do the outer axle bearings come out thru the inside or the outside? thanks.
