What do you put on your tractor to protect the paint and prevent rust?

On patina tractors I like to keep the dull look. On my 606 I degreased the tins and went over them with 0000 steel wool and windex. Then I shot a couple coats of matte clear coat on it. It’s protected, doesn’t attract dust, and it gave me the look I wanted. That was about 4 or 5 years ago. It still looks the same.FC96EF67-4E0A-4BC1-8EF2-4195F0C2801B.jpeg.d5135f57720d156dd2fc238a03bec556.jpeg95323424-C838-45D9-B1D9-E4C0E83E727C.thumb.jpeg.ac07a115be97f8a597dc87b2a4c639ee.jpeg4A9217BA-3011-44E8-BA5D-7FB6E2A26F14.thumb.jpeg.31f6770bd25fc2bd82b7a149b8cb3751.jpeg680FB58E-739D-4B52-8B1E-50192399BC44.jpeg.a04eba2e7cbd0cfe52427b4f24135235.jpeg

cschannuth, my experience is , regular aerosol penetrating oil and a clean cloth , I typically do it  and rub it down till dry , let that sit a day and do it again , you have just fed the paint and stopped any rust . doing that yearly will keep it looking fresh. have also done that and gone next step , to a palm electric buffer with a cleaner wax , that has pulled the paint right out . think its the oil based areosol  spray the really starts the paint wake up , you will notice and feel a smooth and drag free surface , makes your horse look like its well cared for , pete

cheap Deestone 4.00-8 tri ribs on the front and the rears are some 40 year old Ags that dad had on his C-161. Now I have Deestone 10.50’s on those same wheels. Here’s how it looks now. 08D719AC-52F2-4F91-8F33-04F8BDE8CCF0.jpeg.d9ea2095c331463aac19f7a1a54d65c9.jpeg

I would never let my equipment get in to a less than almost new condition.  Below are some examples of vehicles that have been in my family for decades that are all original and still look and perform like new. However, when I get a tractor or truck that wasn’t as well cared for and has good patina, I like to keep the rough look as long as there is no rust through.  I’m just goofy that way, LOL. BD5237E1-2B27-4B29-A040-D7CBEAAAAA84.jpeg.455600b7f4b65fa47e62ac0ca09fc141.jpeg18B1FA6A-5B7B-496C-B1B6-D7EB37FC453B.jpeg.1eebc0f09f30aff440890240d706047a.jpegF072AD71-1E76-47E1-96A2-A355FF0BD321.jpeg.ed37d3a02a62d292e18ce30ff597ea26.jpeg3DFA840F-8F26-4798-8CA2-34FD6E6E053F.jpeg.3851aadcbd0630bb7c17c7577f3db599.jpeg87278103-C63F-4301-A546-BDCE7AD2C4D3.jpeg.587b5d15ebf97f57e858cf0888f81802.jpeg

looking good , what do you use for rustproofing ?  been using lubriplate  open gear and cable spray on my stuff and my mower decks , thinner penetrating oil first to soak in and creep confined areas, then an over spray with the heavy open gear ,680 wt gearoil , for a bombproof  lubrication surface, just sold my older car 14 years old , not a speck of rust, keep it oily, pete

I just rinse the underside of my vehicles here in the rust belt with a garden hose any time they hit mud or salt.  I hand wash the exterior when the weather allows. Everything is kept inside. I’ve never even waxed the original paint on these machines.

I use ATF on anything exposed that is a moving part.  I keep a qt w/spray head on it hanging on the backhoe and one in truck somewhere.  it persists well in the rain and keeps rust at bay.

I suppose one could buff it into the sheet metal worn petina to give it a shine but... I was never much for keeping stuff pretty.  When its done working it gets tarped where it stops moving.
