I think having such talent on this forum rounds it out.  Not just a bunch that knows everything about one thing but a heck of a lot about a lot of things help keeps attention, retention and when it's sprinkled with a little humour here and there, well, quite delightful!  Can always count on getting answers regarding Wheel Horses but perhaps just about anything else as well!  Like a handmade ORNATE oxen yoke!  Who would have thought?

Never know what's next!

Getting back into it later today. Been busy with life a little bit. Will be copying design into transparent paper to be then transferred onto yoke for carving. Backside will be first.

Most ground work and setting in done on back. Modeling will follow after the rest of groundwork is done.

Very nice.  If I could ever do that it would take the rest of my life!  Can't see me ever getting good enough to have any speed at it.

Thank you. Granted that some will have more of an aptitude to do certain things easier than others but it is something everyone can learn. Most will admit defeat prior to starting and that is a mistake. It is not as difficult as some may think. Most important part about it is understanding of wood grain and its characteristics and idiosyncrasies. The same carving in different pieces of wood will prove to be totally different as far as difficulty goes. Most will not realize it but in that last particular photo the background is a lot more difficult to do than the flowers are. As much as the flowers catch ones eye, a less than properly done background will attract ones eyes to its defects or bad workmanship ruining the whole visual impact of the carving. Its also not work to be put a timetable on . It is the piece of wood being carved will dictate how will take not the carver. Frame of mind is also important. Some days one is just not up to it and its best to walk away from it. It is important to have a bit of an artistic eye and be able to draw some visualizing things three dimensionally. Tools also matter but it can be done with essentially a small set of about half a dozen tools. It is how sharp and how they are sharpened that matters most. Again, like understanding wood grain one has to understand how the tool cuts through the wood leaving a finished surface. Very different method of sharpening  compared to regular woodworking chisels. Finally, it is mostly all about technique. That can only be achieved with time and experience.

Don't be afraid to try it. It will prove to be a rather satisfying experience. Just keep at it and give it time.

I have every intention to do some wood carving.  I have a nice piece that is missing some and most likely a candidate.  I expect this will always be a problem for me:

Still enjoyable to see someone else do it well.
