Thank you for this thread!!!  Made me remember that I have 2 model 228F's (If I remember correctly..... look similar to the previous reply that shows the metal carry case) from the 60's-70's that I need to get off of the nails they are hanging on in the shed and fire them up. I LOVE these old things!

I have not seen so many Coleman lanterns in one place as was shown in that one reply!! So awesome!

I’m virtually certain it’s just naphtha.  About $13/gallon last I checked (and rising).

edit:  I now see that @Stepney clarified this authoritatively.

I love Coleman stuff, here is some of my nicer lanterns and I have almost as many stoves.

That’s impressive.  Very nice stuff.  I somehow accumulated about a half dozen over the years, some nicer that others, but never paid over $20.  They’re wonderful things, and all parts are available at the local (gaslit) Mennonite store.  Now that I think about it, maybe they’re Amish, not Mennonite!

I grew up near an Amish community and we always called them Mennonite, but then I moved out to Kansas where they were Mennonites and learned the difference. There are actually a lot a differences in both communities, all based on the church leaders in that group.

Thanks for the thread. I grew up as well with summer camping trips along the river using Coleman stoves and lanterns. Brought back a lot of memories. I can remember going to the Amoco gas station and buying white gas right out of the pump. And now it’s $16.00 for a gallon of Coleman fuel. Have several double mantle lanterns and a 2 and 3 burner stove on the attic. Now you’ve got me thinking I need to get them down and make sure they all work. I keep these 2 guys handy encase I need them.

I sometimes used my single mantel latern on cold nights to keep warm while fishing. I'd put the lantern between my legs and use the heat it gave off. A bit of tin foil wrapped around the globe kept the light directed forward.

WHX??

Yep I remember my dad going and buying at a pump.

White gas was also used in the old skool blow torches.  I have a can of Coleman and always wanted to try it in mine but too chicken. :angry-fire: :angry-extinguishflame:

In the day all auto repair shops had one. We have seen them in use yet in the black smith booths at tractor shows.

One of mine has the optional reflector :thingy:

I can't believe Green has not chimed in .... bet he has a hundred of them. He showed pics of them hanging off his horses and we told him one if by land two if by sea..... Think he's been busy at the salt mine.

Nice Thread!  I'm enjoying the stories!

Well I grew up with dad using the Coleman lanterns and stoves on camping trips and hunting camps and have always wanted my own.  Finally had a reason to go looking for some oldies for an upcoming camping trip.  It was pretty easy with FB of course.  Within a day I had this one picked up!  It's a 220E from June 1962!  I didn't take a before pic but it was good shape, just dirty and hadn't been used in over 25 years according to the owner.  He said he bought it new himself and was the family lantern for years.  But age got to him and no one had interest in using it so it went up for sale.  It had old fuel in it but wasn't rusty inside.  It still ended up needing a complete disassembly and thorough cleaning.  I did replace the generator and pump.  It now works great and was neat to use and have on a camping trip over the weekend.  Also picked up a 425 stove for the trip!  It worked great right away so was ready to go!  Looking forward to years of enjoyment from them!

Love the metal carry case, I have never run across one for sale in the wild or I would have one myself. Very cool!

Here is a lantern box my Dad made in the 70's and we packed it everywhere camping when I was a kid. I have it and the 200A Dad used always used too.

I repainted it once and I would like to redo it again and go Coleman green this time.

I have a little 226 just like yours and really love it!

You can use crown lantern fuel, they sell it at Walmart for much cheaper than the CF.

Less than $8 at my local WM.

Thanks for the info. I checked on the Crown fuel, none of my local WM locations have it. I need to track down a generator for my 3 burner stove and stock up on some mantles.

I have the same red funnel as you too.

It was pure luck that I got it.  I was looking at a couple other lanterns in the $10-20 range.  All needed work and parts, like globes, etc.  I was thinking of how I could make a case as my dad broke a few globes because we didn't have a case in transport.  As I was debating the purchase over a couple days this one popped up for sale with the case for $40 and it was less than a half mile from my house.  Seemed meant to be so I jumped on it!  The guy was in his 80's I'd bet and seemed glad it was going to be put back to use doing what it was meant to do and be appreciated by someone.

I love the look of the red 200a's.  Maybe it's cause they match a WH or something but the first solid deal I come across I am grabbing one...

The fuel in my area in OKC varies a bit from you all.  Academy Sports and Outdoors has the best price on the Crown, 1 gallon for $8.  WM for Crown is $7 for a quart and $12 for a gallon,  $15/gallon for the Coleman.

WHOAAAA, hey now!!  @WHX?? just brought this thread to my attention!

Ya see, long ago (not really), before the Wheel Horse addiction got hold of me, lanterns were my hobby.  They even merged on a couple old lanterns!

Not into it as much these days, sold off most of my collection, but still have maybe 60-70 kicking around.  So cool to see folks still take interest in these things:handgestures-thumbupright:

Excellent collection of lanterns.  I still have a green 2 wick and a red 1 wick.  The red one has a non-glare yellow globe.  I also still have 2 Colman stoves.

After you could not find white gas, we would just use non-leaded gas.  Never had an issue.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

There is a guy on YouTube who gives very competent and completely pleasurable maintenance tips, including special tools to fix those things.  I have a D and E and when I came of age, my first one was a 275. I will find the link to this expert, who bought a huge collection and went to the Coleman repair school.

A fun fact is that Coleman changed the fuel cap after a lawsuit from spraying fuel made a fireball from a full tank.  A tank of fuel lasts about ten hours. That's what might make them a bit expensive to run when compared to the modern stuff. My brother and me had the old Dietz wick lanterns as kids. I can still see the funny patterns my leg shadows made on the ground, and that is why you just get attracted to stuff like that.

Because of this thread, when I was out in the shed last weekend I got my Coleman lantern down off of the nail it was hanging on, pumped it up, lit it......... ol' reliable fired right up! I need to get it's twin out from beneath the dinette seat in our travel trailer and warm it up for awhile.

I love these things!

There is actually a pretty substantial group of collectors across the globe. There are a lot of local gatherings, an annual national convention, and a few other regional ones that see over 100 in attendance! We often 'take over' an entire campground and its not uncommon to see 500+ lit at one time. Lots of trading/buying/selling from in person to halfway around the world. Lots of outdoor cooking and beverage consumption as well;)

Theres even sources for parts, including NOS items for the really old ones.

Nothing produces light as unique as an old white gas lantern.  And that hiss........
