richmondred01 2,237 #1 Posted January 12, 2021 I was just reading that certain words, terms and phrases will not longer be permitted on certain social media platforms. One of those words is “Tranny”. Now let’s all be very careful not to offend big tech and the snowflakes. 3 1 6

squonk 41,038 #10 Posted January 12, 2021 An auctioneer used to say "transamission" As in "Needs a little work on the trans a mission"
Stormin 9,981 #11 Posted January 12, 2021 (edited) Now there's a word that can mean two different things in the and besides trannie as in transmission. Over here a trannie can be a reference to a Ford Transit van or truck. I've had several conversations with members in the States about our use of the English language. Had to explain what a quid was last night. Slang for £1. I bet if I printed what the slang word is for a cigarette is over here, it would come up as ***. While installing a new computer system for a bank in London I was explaining how to use some of the commands, in particular, how to reference file directories. In text it looked like this "c:root/documents/ledger/dailyjournal". I started by saying "See colon slash documents slash..." and had to stop because the room had cracked up laughing. Learned A LOT during that assignment!

stevasaurus 22,711 #19 Posted January 12, 2021 Just walk away Renee. This politically correct language thingy is just like the Metric System. It will never take over, but it will always be irritating. I know I can always use a 1/2" socket on a 13mm nut. You know who they should shoot, the guy that invented Metric Allen Wrenches. Shouldn't they be like Metric Norman Wrenches?? 5
Achto 27,509 #20 Posted January 13, 2021 Thanks for the heads up but I doubt that I'll change my way of speaking. If some one doesn't speak fluent "Gear Head" that's their problem. I will how ever be happy to translate once and only once if I happened to hurt their feelings. From there they can just get over it.

Mickwhitt 4,593 #23 Posted January 13, 2021 Norm, Aren't you forgetting we also used to listen to our favourite radio programmes on a tranny, short for transistor radio. I love language, the difference in meaning between words based on context or even emphasis when spoken. I don't agree so much with the PC brigade as just making a word wrong because it might upset a minority is plain wrong. Plus so many people get "offended" on behalf of other people, when those people probably wouldn't give a damn. Mick
305 380 #24 Posted January 13, 2021 what really offends me is people that get easily offended over the use of a word that they now say has a different meaning . Tranny has meant transmission to me...and many others for many years i am offended that they took our word....where to i go to complain about that?
wallfish 16,985 #25 Posted January 14, 2021 My brother blew a tranny on the highway yesterday. Fluid was everywhere! Then the cops gave him a ride. Are we allowed to say "ride"?
