My research showed  tranny is still a transmission.    Now trannie,  that's another issue.

I did also, Wow I'll have to change my ways. I (previously) used it a lot...referring to transmissions of course!

An auctioneer used to say "transamission" As in "Needs a little work on the trans a mission" :)

Now there's a word that can mean two different things in the :USA: and :UK:  besides trannie as in transmission.

Over here a trannie can be a reference to a Ford Transit van or truck. I've had several conversations with members in the States about our use of the English language. Had to explain what a quid was last night. Slang for £1. I bet if I printed what the slang word is for a cigarette is over here, it would come up as ***.

We're not too old to learn and adapt, right? So we will. :)

While installing a new computer system for a bank in London I was explaining how to use some of the commands, in particular, how to reference file directories.

In text it looked like this "c:root/documents/ledger/dailyjournal".

I started by saying "See colon slash documents slash..." and had to stop because the room had cracked up laughing.

Learned A LOT during that assignment!

I learned the other day not to say she or her because someone might feel like a boy or a he some days.  I don’t understand or agree.  Anyway.. @richmondred01 you’re working on a unidrive huh?  :D

Just walk away Renee.  :occasion-xmas:  This politically correct language thingy is just like the Metric System.  It will never take over, but it will always be irritating.  I know I can always use a 1/2" socket on a 13mm nut.  :hilarious:  You know who they should shoot, the guy that invented Metric Allen Wrenches.  Shouldn't they be like Metric Norman Wrenches??

Thanks for the heads up but I doubt that I'll change my way of speaking. :angry-soapbox: If some one doesn't speak fluent "Gear Head" that's their problem. I will how ever be happy to translate once and only once if I happened to hurt their feelings. From there they can just get over it.

I've never been into this politically correct stuff and ain't gonna start now. You can get away with a lot when your old....

I'm not politically correct and not quite as old as you. Better watch out they want to do away with "Roadapples" next.

Norm,

Aren't you forgetting we also used to listen to our favourite radio programmes on a tranny, short for transistor radio.

I love language, the difference in meaning between words based on context or even emphasis when spoken.

I don't agree so much with the PC brigade as just making a word wrong because it might upset a minority is plain wrong. Plus so many people get "offended" on behalf of other people, when those people probably wouldn't give a damn.

what really offends me is people that get easily offended over the use of a word that they now say has a different meaning .  Tranny has meant transmission to me...and many others  for many years

i am offended that they took our word....where to i go to complain about that?

My brother blew a tranny on the highway yesterday. Fluid was everywhere! Then the cops gave him a ride.

Are we allowed to say "ride"?
