Sure could, but I'd better check the price of taps first, as I dont have many big metric RH/LHs:handgestures-thumbupright:

Keep your eye on Market place in FB and on the selling pages online, Ive seen many adds that are selling there used and some brand new taps and dyes. For us rebuilders they are definately one of the essential tools to have.

I have also found better prices on Heims Joints there. The ones I buy QA1 carbon steel  they run $9 to $11 in 1/2",

Metal Onan flyball spacers are in high demand.  Making them might be easier if you only cut five notches instead of ten.  As I understand it, ten ball governors were only used on generator applications.  Thoughts anyone. @lynnmor

Ten balls were used in the 1800 RPM engines typically used on generators.  Double the weight is needed to operate the governor at half the speed.  Machining five notches would take less time than ten, but not as much as you might think, setup takes much of the time.  The increased weight of a five notch spacer might tend to work loose quicker, the design depends on a press fit with no other means of keeping it in place.

How about a 5 notch spacer with a tab.  One of the members here made some spacers out of titanium with a tab.

The tab will make it go around but only the press fit will hold it sideways.

What actually wears out on the spacer? Can a 10-slot spacer be reused by moving the 5 balls to the unused slots?

They don’t actually wear, the plastic as it ages loses its grip in the bore.

Interesting. I'm sure adhesives have been tried. Wonder is the plastic can be printed?

Actually some have had success with super glue.  Do a complete cleaning and priming along with just a bit of surface scuffing and it would be worth a try.  I did that with a plastic spacer that had a tab and I don’t expect problems.

You sure could print a spacer, I don’t know if you can get material that is up to the task.  Plastics can expand quite a bit in a hot engine and that is at the heart of the problem.  Most complaints of over speeding is found after a complete engine warmup.  Look at the photo of the spacer and see how thin it is at the root of the notches.

I have not forgotten this thread or any of the ideas fellas. Suffering a little 'gloomy weather' depression, between that and the shop being crazy, just not 'feeling' being in there after work and/or weekends.

At the same time, a couple of you mentioned tie rod ends and I'm glad to do them! Shoot me a PM when you're ready and we can move forward- don't let me hold you up!

The experimental/production stuff is gonna have to wait til the sun is shining again and it's time to break the Horses out for springtime work, which is only a month away here in NC. That will light a fire under my rearend, every time:lol::handgestures-thumbup:

Thats an easy part to laser or waterjet, just need a print to send to a shop.

My brother has a Mennonite fab shop down the road from his machine shop we send parts for waterjet.

Super cheap since they don't have overhead, (I.E., workers comp).

We can't even buy the material for what this guy makes the entire part for.

I would be dangerous with a waterjet and some CNC programming knowledge!

At my day job we have 3 large 3D printers, running 24/7.

On the outside we have parts 3D printed out of rubber and metal too.

This would be a part to have 3D printed  but it would cost 100X what the guy down the street does it for

Did you have any luck checking into the 17 or 19 mm taps?

I'd be more than happy to do standard thread but I already have the ends.

A waterjet can't make this part as precise as its needs to be, but a wire EDM can is just slow Video won't load sorry.
