Major overhaul of K301

Going through the process of stripping the engine down today. Writing down each step and taking photos for reference.

Over here STD means something altogether different lol.

Look closely at top of the piston that ends up closest to the exhaust valve at TEC See if there is any erosion.

Ok, engine is stripped down to just the crank case and cam shaft/valves.

Im going to replace the ball race bearings on the crank, they feel ok but while its down I may as well get a pair.

The big end is definitely ovalised and I can feel the wear step in the cylinder. So it was definitely time fore a rebore.

I will take the crankcase through to my machine shop next week when the snow has cleared and get it measured ready to order the parts. 

Anything else I should be looking at while the engine is in bits?

The cam will need to come out to remove the bearing. 
watch the cam shim. Don’t loose it.

I like to put marks on the cam shaft rod so it goes back in the way it was.

I honestly think the K301 I can't get to run at WOT had been apart before I got it and was put back together wrong, something has to be off after all I have done to it has no power and backfires through the carb and shakes like a dog crapping razor blades.

If you want bring it down to Richmond, drop it off and I’ll pull it down and take a look.

Might be a while, I hate pulling them out of those Quietline Cubs dang shaker plate mounts, with a clutch.

The cam is out, no apparent issues there.

The crank bearings look ok but now they are out I will replace them. Looks like the crank may have been spinning inside the inner race so a bit of bearing lock is in order when it goes back together. 

Just the valves to remove, need to fashion a spring compressor as buying one would be a waste of money for this one job. 

Then the valve guides, then off to the machine shop.

Cam clearance should be .005-.010.

thats were the spacer shim goes.

Is that how a piston of a k301 should look like?

 

I have a kohler, somebody tried to rebuild :eusa-hand: but man, it burns more oil than gas, and you can stick a nail between the piston and cilinderwall:lol:

The pistonring seals that area, so it has pretty decent compression, but it just burns oil, it is riding like a steam train with all the smoke.  And the oil dripping from the exhaust

It needs to be torn down if it’s burning that much oil.

could be a broken/stuck ring or valve guides and or both.

If have had the valve on, it's a motor i gat for free as a spare, so it ain't in use, ring is good, just a wrong cylinder size, strange it still makes 100 psi compression though.

 

How would valve guides lose so much oil? and isn't the block shot if it would leak that bad tru those guides?

The piston looks pretty clean, but the skirt is scuffed both sides and there is an area of damage where the exhaust valve is, as mentioned by someone earlier. All the rings were intact.

Valve guides would allow oil into the manifolds by leakage between the valve stem and guide, not the guide and crank case.

And those Valve guides, it's a small area, would they really leak that much oil that the engine is almost struggling to keep running because of the amount of oil?

What I am seeing is an engine in great shape however precise measurements will tell the real story.

 

Unless valve guides are extremely worn, there won't be a lot of oil going by them.

Yes those are photos of my engine not maxwell, it sounds like his is way bad and the only way to diagnose issues is to tear it down as I have done.
