The things people throw away (part 5)

Recommended Posts

The view this morning out our back door of the bodyshop overlooking our scrap yard. It's in the right place (scrap yard) but I will be able to save a few pieces off of it and the price was right

I don't get it either - we live in a throwaway world. I saw this 1979 C81 roller on CL a few years back, being sold locally by a scrap and salvage facility - it was $ 100 or best reasonable offer. So, since I was going to a scrap yard anyway, I loaded up the truck with old struts, brake rotors, and a dead water heater. The tractor clearly had low hours and the PO removed the Kohler K181 and sold the rest. I was interested in it for the 8 speed axle - it shifted fine including Hi and Low, the gear oil was exceptionally clean and full and no seal leaks. I managed to haggle the price down to $75 dollars plus sales tax - the scrap I brought was worth $41, the final cost of the C81 was $38 and change. That Axle is now in the 854 8 speed .......

I tool a load of construction trash to the Garbage Transfer Facility a few weeks ago. This was on the trailer in front of me. it looked almost mew.  I ask the guy if I could have it before he dumped it. he said it worked intermittently.

Checked it out and it needed a forward/reverse switch. I found the exact one for $7 on Amazon and it works great.  Grandkids love it

This was at thee scrap metal yard when I went a few weeks ago.  But it was a little, but just a tiny bit, to big for my 4x8 trailer.

Hey @ebinmaine could you pick this up for me

Yes and no.  Sometimes it's not worth the time and aggravation of dealing with dummies on craigslist or Facebook or ebay.  Why list something for example of a 100 bucks waste your time for the person to show up, if they even do show up, so they can offer you 25 bucks.

I'm right there with you. Over the last few years I've given away things to friends or brought them to the free cycle area of the transfer station more times than I can count just because I don't want to deal with that kind of silliness...

Agreed. My wife volunteers at the local thrift store. Lots of stuff goes there. There's another thrift store nearby run by a national charity. Stuff the local store doesn't have room for goes there. All else fails it goes to the swap shed in Maine. Crazy situation that our town in NH contracts with the next town for transfer services and we can't even leave things in the swap area.
