Tri-ribs and Ags?

Recommended Posts

DennisThornton

I have never had either tri-ribs or ags on a Wheel Horse.  My PK has them but no other GT.  So now I have very nice tri-ribs and big ags for one of my GTs.  But I like turfs with chains for serious traction in snow and dirt and I don't want tri-ribs or ags on the lawn for mowing.  I have a moldboard plow but I now have mostly raised beds in the garden.  Not sure I'll even use my WH tiller now.  Always wanted a set and now that I have them, and I'm very pleased, but it seems I don't know what to do with them!  Yard tractor with cart and go easy in the yard?  It's a very odd predicament for me...

Yeah, that's kind of what I meant by a yard tractor.  But I'd still like chains.  My PK got an engine overhaul and I'm now planning on an overall restore but back when it was my only tractor I ran worn ags with big chains year round.  Wasn't as hard on the yard as I expected and great in snow or woods.

Well, if I can't figure out what to do can I reach out to "her"?

I don't normally speak for anyone ... especially her ... I can pretty much guarantee you if you spent the money to ship them up here she'd happily paint them and send them right back.

But I'd be willing to bet you could buy some masking tape and a deck of cards or get some really thin sheet metal and make up a tube, for a lot less.

I pasted the pic in and reread my post and almost deleted it saying this is stupid!  But I'm serious.

Both sets came off John Deeres but different sellers.  First didn't want tri-ribs for his lawn and the second seller wasn't happy with the ag's traction in snow with his snowblower and went to turfs with chains.  So to me both the tri-ribs and ags are special purpose and I've always preferred turfs with chains for serious traction.  So all day I've been wondering  what do I do with these?  It's a terrible problem!

@DennisThornton, I think you would be pleasantly surprised by how much yard they DON'T tear up while mowing (unless super swampy areas) because they don't loose traction much, you could still use chains if needed just remember 2 link not 4... And I'm still a firm believer that those Carlisles or my OTRs are hard pressed to beat by turfs and chains fluid filled and weighted doing serious dirt or snow removal (speaking from my personal experiences over the last 20+ years).

I'm looking forward to trying the card trick for the first time!

The ags are on Deere rims and the seller said he priced rims at his dealer and was told $200 each!  Wow!  I didn't put much value on the rims but I'm not sure I have spare wide rims AND I don't have to change them.  Paint is in great shape so a quick prep, deck of cards and a rattle can later I should have nice rims too.

It's a neat trick and it works super slick. Just like anything else you have to remember to set it up correctly.

Couple of things to keep in mind about tires and traction, the older the rubber the harder they are not allowing flex to "bite" especially when cold, along with that is 2 and 4 ply tires are better for traction than 6 ply for the same reasons, doesn't matter turf, AG, or ribbed treads, same goes with vehicles say you have a car with 10k miles on the tires but are 5-6 years old won't grip the pavement wet or dry like the same tire with 15k miles and only a year or so old. And snow tire grip more than all seasons because of the "compounds" they are made of not to wear long but to bite for the few months they are designed to be used.

Somewhere in this thread I mentioned that my PK ran chains on ags for years and it really wasn't bad on the yard.  And I was sort of surprised that the seller was not happy with them and now happy with turfs with chains because I would have thought that this tread style would work reasonably well with chains.  HOWEVER, thinking back he didn't say that he even tried chains on these ags.  But he did NOT like these ags in the snow.

And yes about 4-links.  You may have missed my post regarding my new to me Bolens 1050, posi, turfs with chains.  All I could find was 4-links and I had forgotten how much I dislike 4-links!

I have commercial  23x10.5 Carlisle AGs and I am not at all fond of those in the snow and mine are loaded!

A big important lesson that I had to learn a few years ago was that it is to some extent of course, the tread of the tire, but the WEIGHT... That's where the traction is for snow or ice.

These are Carlisle Tru-Power and NOT Super Lugs.

And I couldn't agree with you more about weight.  I plowed for hours Sat and yesterday with my "new" Bolens with posi and when both tires with chains spin you need WEIGHT!

Now I've got to find metal weights with a big hole in the center so I can access the pozi adjustment...  Bolens had a big "BOLENS" cast right in them.  I might fill them and keep looking for weights.

Those Bolens weights are out there. In fact, that's what's on Trina's 867.

I hope so.  I think I've been able to find Wheel Horses because there was a dealer not far north of here and just over the big pond in Burlington.  I have no idea where there was a Bolens dealer...  And I've got to have hole in the centers.

Whatever you decide to put them on Dennis, you’re going to think “Man that does look pretty cool !!” At least that’s how I felt after mounting a pair on my C-165 Automatic. Now I just need some tri ribs or the ones with 5 ribs, I’m not sure what they are called?

Oh!  Absolutely!  And yes, I want the tri-ribs and ags on the same ride.  But which one?  And for what?  Besides taking nice pictures.  I still think that turfs and then with chains are the best all purpose and how I've gotten by for decades.  But now I want one to LOOK good too!  I tend to think the older WHs look the best with them.  Maybe I'll have to finish my C-160.

Love the big blade!  And the wheel weights!  (No comment on the 4-links...)

I've got some 48" blades but NO 54".  But unless I were to add Wallfish's roller chains on the front I wouldn't be steering, the 54"s would be.

Very nice!
