Blade weights?

First off happy new year all . ! I'm wondering if anyone has tried adding weight to there plow blade . I thought it would help for scraping the packed down snow off of my driveway?

I just go with the blade. Works great.

 

If you lift it manually like I do, weight would not be your friend...

You could use a solid lift bar.  Then you could apply down pressure as needed by pushing the lift lever.

I kinda haphazardly hung 84# on top of the moldboard which still allowed the trip action to work on some of the more solid high spots. All because I couldn't find (and still can't) the solid lift link in made last spring, but I can find my copy of the blueprints.

What, the lift link or the weights? Those weights the cut outs just barely fit over the the top edge of the blade and honestly just "hung" them on there just to cut the ice/slush that afternoon.

The rule at my house is nobody drives on the driveway until dad hits it with the blade. Even if that means driving through the yard. Undisturbed snow plows easily and cleanly. Yes, they think I’m nuts but it works. It improves traction too since the concrete is clean behind the blade.

My blade is heavy enough as is!  I have a 54" blade (made for D series tractors) with a custom made cutting edge, much bigger and heavier than stock.  It is 3/8" thick and 4" wide.  Also, I have added 2"x2" angle iron reinforcement to the top edge of the blade to stop that inevitable bow that occurs in these wider blades.

My older 42" modded to 50" and then an older 54" I found later,  actually never bowwed, but that 56" pictured above was slightly bowwed before I brought it home and I did tweak that lighter gauge steel hanging those weights, but still cheaper than a broken bone on icy pavement.

Like Row Cropper mine has a larger heavier scraper edge plus added some extra weight on the middle of plow the frame. That adds weight to the rear as well as the blade. 654 with manual lift and a solid link so being a shorter plow frame it didn't have as much weight as the longer frames do. It's not too bad to lift but it would be nice to graduate to a hydro tractor since there's quite a bit of up and down given the situation here. Just resisting getting older I guess! LoL

Everyone needs a hydro with a hydraulic lift John.      It just takes some tough guys longer to admit.

Maybe more lazy than tough Ed. There's an extra 418-C out there doing nothing since swapping the 2 stage to a 520-HC, plus a snow/dozer blade or 2 somewhere that were supposed to be a new improved bike build. Or, maybe it's just old men and change don't mix well?  I like that little 654 for some reason even though it's been mechanically neglected over the past few years.

SEVEN , what type of finish is on your driveway ?  is it paved ,or dirt /gravel? another thing is what finish is on your blade for turning / rolling snow ? do you silicone or fluid film your blade? for ease and swing of snow . depending on snow depth , I  usually  center cut it , just to break thru , and see how it moves to the plow.  I also always ,back cut my width , so I can  have a place to put it . as we know , you might only have one chance to move snow , so make your initial moves with that in mind , pete

Age and treachery will always beat youth and skill... or is that old plows always dig the same furrow...?

I'm sorry maybe It does it's a charger 12 hp hydro  if I go ahead and put that on it shouldn't damage anything will it?
