Gregor 4,846 #1 Posted December 31, 2020 Does anyone use anything on their treated wood deck for snow and ice, or do you just have to let nature take care of it?

ebinmaine 67,292 #3 Posted December 31, 2020 We try not to use salt cuz it's not great for the dogs feet. Been known to use wood stove ashes which is a tad messy but works fantastic.

Achto 27,509 #6 Posted December 31, 2020 Shovel, broom, etc & sunlight is best. I don't recommend putting salt on it.
Gregor 4,846 #7 Posted December 31, 2020 It has a 1/2" layer of ice on it, (with more forcasted) that a shovel won't touch. Guess I will wait for April.
formariz 11,987 #8 Posted December 31, 2020 Leave it alone. Just clean snow off of it . Never apply any salt or salt based products to wood. In time changes wood ability to expand and contract due to dehydration causing premature decay. Also avoid power washing as much as possible. Its the major cause of rotting wood decks.
WHNJ701 4,165 #9 Posted December 31, 2020 Next time, I am going to tell my kids there's a 20 dollar bill somewhere on the deck under all the snow, and hand them each a shovel. See if they believe me....

WVHillbilly520H 10,373 #12 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) Unfortunately, I'm gonna be the polar opposite guy here, I/we throw some salt (if only table salt) only where we will be walking as our deck is our #1 route of ingress/egress and if I have to replace a few "cheap" treated 5/4 boards vs a trip to the E.R. for one or more of us, because I can't mechanically remove the ice in the first place, to fix a broken bone or 2, ... Usually once the ice is gone I sweep the remaining salt off anyways, if its snow yes shovel and go on, but the mess 2 weeks ago was sleet with freezing rain on top followed by snow overnight required something to make it safe to go in and out of the house, my bones remaining solid and metal free is way cheaper than replacing a few "low quality" treated boards they are passing off as the stuff they sold 30 years ago. JMO as your mileage may vary. Edited January 1, 2021 by WVHillbilly520H
