Why lever steer on early tractors?

@Lane RangerRanger

Thanks for sharing those pics. Good memories there.

At that house we had about three acres of land and some over two of that was grass that needed to be cut.

I'm fairly sure I've mentioned it on this site somewhere in the past that my old man put together a home made gang mower that he towed behind that Ariens.

Had a total cut width of around 8 or 9 ft

when I hear or read levers to steer - almost immediately think of the Allis Chalmers HD5 high lift (front loader) we had ...

lever and clutch on the left - and lever and clutch on the right

pics below of a similar machine ... our HD5 actually also had a back hoe attachment on the rear ...

That is referred to as a "TILLER" steering rather than a lever steer. It was used on most early automobiles. Push left to go right..

Seems to me that's how the early Ariens was that I drove as a little kid.

Handy Don

Had a job as a teen mowing the grass for a very well-off family in our town. They had two Ariens riders--an older but still going model and a spiffy new one.  My job was to trim around the all the many trees and garden parts in the front and back with the push mower, then mow the BACK lawn with the older rider, and then drive the new mower to her back door and leave it running so the lady of the house could get on and mow the FRONT lawn where all her neighbors would see her. Then she'd leave the mower by the back door for me to put back in the garage.  She was a very nice person and paid well.

Have to keep up good appearances for the neighbors I guess
