HorseFixer 2,012 #1 Posted December 30, 2020 (edited) There are many reasons to name a Few The person at TORO who decided to block the airflow on the back cylinder Under the Motor Tins should have had his head examined. As you all know the 520H has a long history of the valves going on the rear Cylinder. Remote mounting the Oil Filter takes care of that Plus the remote oil filter bracket lets you install a larger filter to protect your engine. I have in my possession Several of these filter adapters that have worked excellent the past 10 years on My Snow Chucker and I have a Digital Oil Pressure Setup. Works Great. HERES SOM OLE Pics when I Did mine. Also alot of heat can be taken away from getting the exhaust out from under the hood on the right rear side. That is, if you don't like Roasted wiring! The other thing servicing is much easier among other things. Edited December 30, 2020 by HorseFixer 5
Pullstart 62,922 #2 Posted December 30, 2020 The second to the last pic, the block adapter... those plugs is where the oil comes from and goes back to? I imagine they have 90 degree barbs for the hoses?

The Onan engine installed by Wheel Horse/TORO is a stock engine and not modified. We can't accuse the tractor builder of poor engineering on this item. I think you will find that the remote oil filter kit was developed for those installations where filter changes would be impossible without it. 2

They should have installed the remote oil filter on the engine to prevent the problems from happening. horseyheaven 112 #7 Posted December 30, 2020 I did the same thing to the one that I use to mow during the hot summers. Only thing different is I mounted it to the engine shroud near the fuel pump. If I can snap a picture with my phone, I will attach it. I have not done my other 520 because I use it in the cold weather months for snow. I figured it would not get too hot during winter right?????? Excellent job on installing this. It looks OEM.
horseyheaven 112 #8 Posted December 30, 2020 I also have an Onan Oil Cooler as well, but I never figured out how to install it with the filter system. I was afraid it might be too much for the oil pump to try to pump oil through all of these locations.
Bill D 1,926 #9 Posted December 31, 2020 I like it. Is the plug for the shroud a factory piece? If so what is the part number? If not how did you make it? How much are you asking for those adapter blocks. Bill
Greentored 3,216 #10 Posted December 31, 2020 (edited) @HorseFixer I did it on my 520H last year after reading your posts about it, but used a thread on adapter right onto the original filter boss. Much easier access, less oil mess inside the shroud for dirt to collect, no more need for the 'seal' between the shroud and filter. Another benefit is anytime you can carry oil away from the engine and back, it helps with oil temp- that's big on air cooled engines! Simply adding external oil drain tubes from the heads back to the crankcase on an old Harley shovelhead will drop the oil temp 10 degrees. On another note- I also 'tightened' the steering based on your youtube video. This was my very first Wheel Horse, and you showed me just how easy they are to work on! I hold you partially responsible for this addiction and barn full of machines that I knew would NEVER happen to me Edited December 31, 2020 by Greentored

Those are the only things I would have changed about the OP's installation. Mounting the filter vertically allows you to prefill it with oil during an oil change instead of having to rely on the pump to do so. That prevents several seconds of the engine running without oil at the first start up after an oil change. Having shorter hoses minimizes how much oil has to be pumped before it gets to the engine. 3 1

seuadr 488 #15 Posted March 25, 2021 @HorseFixer Hey, question for you - i have the OEM kit that i am working on installing on a new motor - did you stick the sending unit for the oil pressure in that plot on the top of the filter adapter? i'm trying to figure out if i can find/fit a sending unit that will do a pressure and the idiot light (cause i'm an idiot ) and wondering if you have any pictures? what i would really love is to find a combined temp/pressure sending unit, but so far that has been no bueno.
