Frontmounted Brushmower

I have been thinking about putting brush-mower on the front of a Wheel Horse.

I am thinking to run it of the PTO, but seems not easy, with belt angles an such, and it can draw a lot of power, a self powered would be simpler.

Anybody any experience?

I've considered doing this not with a brush mower but with a snow blower.

 

For your brush mower application I would ABSOLUTELY leave it SELF-POWERED.

 

This would give you the advantage of not only having the power of the unit up in the front where it should be and all on its own but also on the occasion that a brush mower dies or if you stop a blade beyond being able to rotate by using the PTO it could potentially stall the engine extremely fast and do damage such as, at the least, shearing a flywheel key.

 

If you left the power of the tractor and the power of the mower alone you would have the ability to raise the mower and drive back to wherever your facility to repair is.

 

I have here a very large commercial walk behind snowblower and I've considered many times adding that to the front of a Horse.

 

As far as lift and lowering it I'm not sure... If you use a cable lift system as you see in the picture above it seems like it would work okay.

I’m toying with same idea for a big walk behind leaf blower... if I do, I’m gonna keep it powered on its own for reasons @ebinmaine, as always, eloquently and succinctly elucidates above...

Here in Belgium somebody is selling thisleaf sucker/blower, It needs a 25 hp engine he says hahhaha

The advantage to having something like this is that you can take it for a test run BEFORE you try to mount it on your tractor so you understand fully what its capabilities are

And see if it's not to brutal for hanging in the front, great point sir.

The thing is i have to get it running first, i tend to never buy stuff in running conditions

@Maxwell-8 that can end up with the same situation of what i did,

I simply rework it with a Hydraulic Motor to trim the Hedge with my FEL...

works great for me.

Sickle bar mowers do not cut brush.  Tall grass weeds etc yes.  woody plants not reliably

This is not mine but what I use for a brush mower. The 30" blade is 3/8" thick by 3" wide if I remember correctly. I added a brush guard which stops 99.9% of anything that wants to fly out.

The input shaft runs on tapered roller bearings lubricated by the engine/transmission oil. Easy to cover up the input end to keep dirt out and grease the bearings like you would a wheel bearing.

The adaption to a 4 wheel tractor would be easy by turning the gearbox on the deck shell as illustrated.

These tractors are very heavy so 1" trees get climbed until they are pushed over and then back up to cut them off.

This model has a 2-speed axle to slow the ground speed down which is necessary.

The most desirable model uses a 2" pipe plug at the top of the gearbox.
