Model Engine

Recommended Posts

We had a delayed Christmas with our two daughters yesterday. We all agreed that it had to be safe so it was outside around a campfire with our masks on. One of our grandsons, Koda, is 11 years old and quite creative in building things but, like so many kids these days, spends too much time playing video games. One of the things we got him was this model engine that he would have to build. I figured it would be a bit of a challenge for him and something educational. Last night, about 4 hours after they left he sends this video.

His comment was "I need something more challenging now".   I told my wife that I'm taking that as a challenge. His birthday comes up in a couple months and I gotta figure out something. :)

Unfortunately the sound didn't load. It's pretty cool hearing it operate.

i think it's time for a real motor. find an old small Briggs 2-3 hp flathead engine and completely take it apart. then he can put that together and get it to run

:text-yeahthat: Might be time for a real engine.  Maybe enough pieces parts to assemble a mini bike or something.

You could introduce him to the old school balsa and tissue airplanes too.  Said he is looking for something more challenging.

WHX??

:text-yeahthat:

I built a V-8 from a kit when a youngster. Was quite the elaborate model with working distributer & sparkplugs (lights) and all. Was all clear and could see the inner workings. Good way to get kids interested in mechanicals these days.

Good ideas. I think his Mom prefers 4 wheels so I'm thinking an old school style go cart. Either a basket case or I make it a basket case. I really like the Wheel Horse thing too. :)

Now you can start buying him his own tools and tool box.  :occasion-xmas:  At 11 he is ready for real tools.

Buy him one of those hit n miss engine kits. The kind where all you get is a block of iron and a block of brass. Of course you'll have to buy him a whole machine shop but you get to play too! :banana-wrench:
