Grip tape or truck bedliner?

I was going to use the grip tape on my footrests but my wife thought the rattle can truck bedliner might be a good idea.

 

Has anyone used bedliner on their footrests.  Maybe even sprinkle some sand while it's still wet for a little extra grip.

 

Suggestions?

Thanks, I was thinking about that too.  I've never used the spray on and was wondering how it holds up to foot traffic.

I was also thinking that if I used the bedliner, doing the entire footrest, extending it all the way up the back of the footrest where it goes under the front of the fender pan (my original plastic one is long gone, replaced by metal from later model) where the two surfaces rub together and always rusts after the paint is rubbed off.  I think this might eliminate that paint problem.  What I don't know is how durable the spray on liner is.  If it would resist that abrasion for very long.

Well it resists a lot of abuse in a truck bed, so I would say go for it. Perhaps put a couple of those little stick on rubber pad things on each of the footrest parts up under the fender pan, where it should rest, and then overspray that too.

I tried both of these brands and the Harbor Freight stuff went on much smoother. I would add a little sand to both if you go that way. 

I like using this stuff under seat pans and running boards too, seems to take pressure washing better. 

 

The best non slip strips came from McMaster Carr. 24" long, no yellow line and stick real good.

I think you mean a smoother finish when dried?  So you would recommend the Rusto for more texture?  I want texture...

 

I still have not ruled out the grippy tape though.

 

McMaster shipping is pretty outrageous.  And with them you don't get an invoice until AFTER you've received the item usually.  They don't tell you how much for shipping when you check out.

I just bought some .010 shim stock for $16.50 ... best price I found ... but the shipping turned out to be 10 bucks.

Could have got the same thing on Amazon for $23 with free shipping!  Net 4 bucks cheaper.  Oh well...

I know what you mean about the shipping from MMC, I always wait, (if I can), to consolidate the order for all the stuff I need and get it at one time. On the other side, I think there quality is second to none. 

They do sell a really aggressive anti-slip material for out door use. Might be the best fit??

I have used the skateboard grip tape on a couple  and like it very much. Comes in lots of colors and patterns too.

I still have a couple of part roll grip tape from replace it on an aluminum van running boards. I have used on my tractors, 

They are dirty from all the rain we have had.

Hay that looks great --good idea----I think I used some for a JD 212 I cut them down but they worked great. Good job there.

I found some on Amazon that is a 'fade' from red to black.  I bet that would look spiffy!  Put some in my shopping cart.  Decide later.

This is brush on bedliner. I taped off area and hand painted red afterwards. I have used up the can and don't remember the brand.

I decided to go with BOTH the rattle can bed liner AND the grip tape.

 

Getting the glue residue from the original grip tape off was impossible.

 

Picked up a can of the Rusto spray on liner and figured what the hell, I'll just spray over the glue residue, how bad can it look?  It looked pretty bad.

 

Sprayed the entire footrest (off the machine) top and bottom.

 

So now to hide the glue residue, I'll put black grip tape where the old stuff was.  Maybe cover a slightly larger area.  Ordered a 10" x 36" piece which will be enough for both rests and then some.  I'll probably wet sand the area where the grip tape will go just to knock down the texture and scuff it up for better adhesion.

We use a variety of the spray bedliners in wheel wells and other misc stuff at the shop- it all holds up very well!

Just throwing another option out there- SEM brand chip guard. #39803 satin clear, #39813 satin black. Lays on a bit thinner than bedliner, but dries a bit more 'abrasive/grippy', especially if you lay the last shot on a bit light.

The clear is a wonderful option for durability in areas where you dont want to really 'see' it- like inside the wheel wells on our Horse restorations

I've seen roughneck boats covered with epoxy grit (think the rough paint used on the grounds around commercial swimming pools).

 

IMO would be more durable, and better resistant to heat and UV that bedliner.

Me too, and I also like the idea of the strip along the side panel too.  I might have to do that with mine since I'll have extra material.  It will be black but I think that would look good.  Thanks for the idea!

The parts were cured enough to lay them in place to see how they will look.

Already got a foot print on it!  darn!  I guess I better get used to that.

Grip tape should arrive Saturday.

 

 

While I had them off I also painted the control panels but not with bed liner.  Again, nothing is bolted back together yet.  I could have spent a little more time sanding and cleaning, the flash really shows the defects but you can't really see them in 'normal' lighting.  As SWMBO says; "It's only a tractor!"

I like the idea of paint on vs. glue on and here is why. On the late model series, the glue on footrests just rust the paint underneath. On my motorcycle lift table, i just added sand to black Rustoleum paint and it worked great. Black beauty sandblast media would be even more aggressive a grip surface. I am thinking if you plow snow and your boots get any salt on them that it would really get underneath the glue on stuff and rust in a hurry.
