My first Wheel Horse

Recommended Posts

Triton53

I just bought a Wheel Horse 416-8.  The body parts need sanding and paint but engine and trans seem to be in good shape.  I found a tag under the seat listing the model as 73420 and the serial number srarting with 59001.  I am soaking  the dirt off to get the rest of the numbers.

One of my questions is what color red do people use to repaint their WH?  I am sure that I will have a lot more questions as time goes on.

Thanks   Pete

IH red is used a lot when sprayi g with enamel and regal red with spray can.

I would suggest getting it mechanically in tip top shape before worrying about paint!

Be sure to post pics, we love pics!!

Welcome to redsquare.

The model number isn't right it should start with  31-16 or something like  (31-16k801)

The 416-8 was built in 1985 - 1997.

Pictures 📷 please

as Randy said also change the oil and trains fluid. You'll get all the info You'll ever need here.

I plan to remove the sheet metal to give the tractor a power wash before I change oils etc  While the panels are off,I will pick at sanding and painting as I have time.

TRITON53,  welcome to the site ! agree with others as to priority of getting a baseline service done first , think about paint later ,  if you are going to remove body panels , why not just marvel mystery oil , rub them down ? a clean rag and MMO  rub down will retain patina and stop rust , if you rub the oil in till dry your paint will look much better , and let you get after the basics , instead . just removing panes will let you see how things work , like your drive belt set up , your pto drive , your clutch linkage . if it starts and runs regularly , take advantage and get after any corrosion or frayed wiring , thorough greasing and fluid changes . let us know how you are doing , send pictures , ask questions , a response is a sure thing , good luck , pete

:text-welcomeconfetti:I use Rustoleum Regal Red in a spray gun and add Majic brand Enamel hardener from Tractor Supply.  Other brand hardeners also work.

For new wheelhorse decals checkout Redo You Horse in the Vendors Section.  Terrys are top notch.

We are here to help, lots of good folks on this site.    You will want to strip that Sheetmetal down to bare metal and start with a self-etching primer.      We would like to follow your progress.

And find a plow, you’d be amazed how much Rhode Island snow that little tractor will push!
